I tried to unscrew it, its such a small surface area my pliers couldn't get a grip, is there a special tool for this?

yes it should be a small "C" spanner.the tips of long nosed pliers in each groove works but be carefull,if they slip you can cause nasty scratches to the body.

it is easy enough to get an old screw driver and file out the center of the blade to make a driver
that will fit the nuts

this page will help along with other similar pages linked to this page
there are lots of vids on moding your Dx6i
it is easy to replace the switches one trick ive learned was in stead of de-soldering the wires and then trying to remember where they go
cut them with about 2-3mm of insulation still on the switch then when you put the new switch in you can see exactly where they go
by looking at the old switch which will still have the coloured wire still attached
I have replaced switches on mine and added a back light and a buzzer for when the battery timer ends as well as a quick paint job
