conopy painting

is it possible to paint a plastic canopy as i have a raptor 30 with a standard canopy not fibre glass and useing rattle cans have done a basic paint job but the paint now dry can be almost peeled of...i did the hot soapy water wash and lightly keyed the suface with a scotch bright ....should i have used a plastic primer...becouse i thought the rattle cans from the high street motor parts store were good for plastics .............

ive not seen anyone manage to paint one and make it stick, even with etch/plastic primers. the fibreglass ones are only about £25 iirc if you wish to paint your own, or alternatively there was always loads of stickers sets on ebay when i was looking a couple of years back

I painted one last year for someone on here, and that was plastic, I just sanded it then hot washed with soapy water and primed it, then airbrushed it.
Ive not heard anything lately on how the canopy has fared over the space of the year etc, but it seemed to have a dam good bite on the plastic, so im hoping it lasted a bit.

but yeah fibreglass IS a LOT easier and better to paint on.

You have made a beautiful job of painting that canopy but I'll bet its a real bitch to see in flight to be honest.

Mixing dark colours with a dark frame has to make it difficult mate..

The paint job is fantastic though.. Well done..

i only picked it up yesterday second hand and it does a little bit of sorting i did give it the once over and fire it up it will hover sort of but needs a lot of input i dont think the gyro is up to much its a csm 180 i will replace it with a 401 as soon as i can

i painted my plastic canopy using plastic primer from halfords and then flourecent plasticoat paint. covered with auto 2 pak laquer. and thb it didnt last long. as you say if you bend the edges when fitting the canopy it cracks and peels then the nitro gets underneath and its downhill from there!
jamiem's advice is the best get a sticker set off egay.. or go to a sign company and buy a few off cuts of vynil and make your own

I did exactly the same as Boggy but used fuel proofer instead of 2 pak laquer and it has lasted well over a year now, ok it looks dog rough close up but in the air it looks ok
