Of course, the harsh reality is that the London underground will instantly undermine anything that we're doing with social distancing and all that stuff in the context of flying or other outdoor activities. Those tube carriages are efficient distribution mechanisms, a virtual virus's dream, you'd be hard pressed to conceive of a better system for transmitting and spreading a virus.

    .... But I digress...

Suddenly, it all becomes clear to me why we're screwed.

In my club whats app this morning, the first guy to post, says him and another member will be going to the field for 4 hours (WTF?), then another pipes up that he has to meet one of them, so he'll fly next, then another says, oh if you're going I'll bring you some items.

So, that's common sense for you. It's not that common.

Indeed, 4 hours! The thing is, if I fly alone, I can do 5 or 6 flights and I'm ready to leave. Even if I rest a bit, take my time changing packs, let the motor cool etc. I'm done in an hour.

But If I turn up and everyone else is there, like on a sunny Saturday, I'll be there 4 hours and only fly half as much, the rest of the time waiting while others fly.

I've made it clear that people are to turn up, fly, then go home, and spend as little time at the field as possible. The guy(s) that wanted 4 hours requested it before I'd posted my guidelines for using the field.

Yeah I think people just turning up and flying and then going home is the way it has to happen. Which is ok by me as that’s how I always flew anyway. Well I did, I let my membership lapse but I’ve not been able to get in touch with the secretary so I guess it academic and I won’t be flying anyway.

                    Go to flying site
                    Fly your model
                    Carry out advice on sanitizing
                    Follow advice on social distancing
Do not arrange to meet anyone at the flying site , as this would be a gathering
If the flying site is over crowded go away and return at a quieter time (it will be very hard to know when a quieter time is)
If you are in a high risk group have a good hard think about going any where near the flying site
If you or anyone within your house hold have symptoms or think you may have symptoms stay way from the flying site and isolate as per the Governments guide lines

That's if you wish to fly your models

                    Now think on this
the countries that have relaxed their restrictions have had an increase in reported cases and hospital admissions due to COVID-19
have an educated guess what's going to happen in the next few weeks within the UK
yes we will follow what's happened to those countries
so is it worth going to the flying site yet?
I'll be waiting for a while longer
The chances of me meeting anyone at the flying site are very slim to none , but I'm still staying away

Well, our club is open again, although we never officially closed. And we have no rota or protocols about days and times and social distancing etc. so we shall see how it works out.

The thing is, these regulations inevitably must be worded as 'one size fits all', and must acknowledge the lowest common denominator / worst case scenario, which of course, is not actually reality for everyone - different parts of the country have vastly different risk levels, outdoors vs indoors is a huge difference. The intent / spirit of the law being about preventing many people making contact where one or more might have the virus or be unknowingly distributing the virus from a surface etc.

So, you follow the 'letter of the law' to avoid a fine (most likely you'd get a warning first), you follow the intent of it to stay safe and take that as far as you wish, depending on what you think the risk level is.
