  • House contents insurance!

Turns out, on the renewal, model aircraft are NOT covered AT-ALL for theft from the house or replacement of any kind if the house floods, burns down etc.

I've tried Axa, Halifax and Privilege; none of these cover model aircraft at all.

Who are you with, and does your policy cover model aircraft?

This is the first I've heard about that.

Anyway, my search skills lead me to this. https://www.highworthinsurance.co.uk...del-insurance/

I'm sure the BMFA used to advertise an insurance provider for your models as well, though I can't seem to find it right now.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

Thanks, i'll call them tomorrow. Direct line also exclude "drones and model aircraft".

Check your policies. All the policies i've read tonight are excluding model aircraft.

I'll have to check this out. I have Direct line and thought everything would be covered when it's in the house .

??? I'll have to checks ours now? But I'm 99% sure they are as I didn't see anything specifying they don't. We're with Tesco.

I have just read my entire policy and from what I can tell, the only area where they mention drones and model aircraft is with regard to liability:

Section 2 ContentsPage 17You’re not covered for
              Any liability relating to:

death or illness of, or bodily injury to, you or your domestic staff
damage to property belonging to or being
looked after by you or your domestic staff
death, illness, injury, loss or damage caused by:you owning or occupying any land or building except yourhome or temporary holiday accommodationany businessan agreement, unless that liability would have existed anyway
              you
owning, keeping or using any: vehicles, except caravans and trailers while they are not being toweddrones or model aircraftanimals except domestic p

So I am interpreting this section to mean they will not cover liability, caused by me owning or using drones or model aircraft. This does not mean they're not covered in the event of theft when they're in the flat.
I can double check this with them to be sure but it appears fairly clear.

When I first read this thread, and started searching, all the articles I found all related to liability, which is why we have third party insurance (BMFA etc).

They are covered on my Admiral policy by default, though if not specifically listed there is a limit of £1000 for any one item. I found this out recently after a LiPo fire damaged a heli, i could have claimed, this was confirmed by the guy at Admiral. I decided not to in the end because after I paid the excess and the hike in premiums that would occur for years afterwards. Seems like around £1000 is the tipping point where it becomes cost effective to claim, which is why they probably set the unlisted single item value at that price!

after seeing the Fisher family go through hell with Direct line I can confirm that model helis and ! their accessories are NOT covered , Dave and summer had their helis stolen and have not been paid out despite an ongoing battle to prove they are Not ! "vehicles", that's the excuse DL are using for not paying out ,.....
To anyone expecting their helis covered ,... GET IT IN WRITING !!!!!!! I cannot emphasise that enough ....

Tesco exclude "motorised vehicles", page 4 (https://www.tescobank.com/assets/sec...oklet-0518.pdf) in the definition of "contents", "excluding motorised vehicles".

A vehicle is a device used to carry a person or goods (online dictionary). So I guess its not excluded? I'll have to check. The above post suggests Direct Line have a different meaning to Vehicle.

Hopefully, the guy that has an issue with Direct Line will take it to the ombudsman and then court for a final decision of the meaning of the word, win and get his payout.

EDIT: Tesco have confirmed on the phone that they are NOT covered.

Strange how classification has gone from 'toy' to 'vehicle'. It would seem it is open to change as and when it suits a given arguement.

'Vehicle' is an object that you can get into as far as I know. Explaining that to Tesco was waisted on the phone. The operator was adiment that it was a "remote controlled vechile" and the fact I couldn't get into it was irrelevent lol.

I called Legal and General, and despite the wording in their documents, they are happy to cover them and confirm that in writing, so hopefully, i'm sorted.

                            Call your insurer and check!

Better yet get them specifically listed on your policy, then there is no debate. Also as i mentioned in my last post, if they are not specifically listed the most that insurers will pay for a single item is £1000, which doesnt scratch the surface of a high end heli.
