  • Best solder for general usage

    Guys,

Just looking for a recommendation for some solder for general use - soldering battery connections, connectors onto ESCs, occasional soldering onto SMT chip legs etc. - i.e. a jack of all trades.....

    Cheers,
    Mike.

I wouldn't go larger than 0.6mm max for SMT work, but that's too small for connectors. I'd get a roll of 1mm and a roll of 0.5 or 0.6mm multicore 60/40

After recently switching to 63/37 solder, I wouldn't go back. Not a chance. It's almost impossible to get a cold solder joint, as it's eutectic and goes from liquid to solid in an instant.

Buy some decent stuff, not banggood tripe (I have both) as there's a massive difference. Warton metals make some good stuff.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

Thanks guys - I would almost certainly have bought BG / HK tripe

Sn62Pb36Ag02 also has Eutectic properties. Have been using the Kester brand of it for about 10 years now

                Hey guys.

I've not tried many solders but have tried to keep the cost of it to a minimum so it doesn't effect my prices.
So far for me this stuff works well for connectors and small smt stuff.

                At £15 for 500g it's keenly priced.

Just to add, I used to hate soldering and dreaded it until I got a butane torch. It changed my life! For removing a connector the torch rules! For everything else the regular solder tip heats up so fast and gets good and hot and there's plenty of heat even for big battery wires. Plus there's no annoying mains cable hanging out of it.
