  • 3/4s parallel charging

    Hi guys
I need to start parallel charging as my battery collection is growing and it takes an age to charge ready to fly.
I have a few questions i need answers to if you could help.
I currently have a overlander rc s60 (60watt) balance/storage/discharger that does all the different types of battery like lipo, liFe, hvlipo, nimh etc etc
This only accomadates upto 4cells on the balance plug.
1 question is can i use this charger to parallel charge multiple batteries at once or would i need something more substantial??
If this is no good for the job what would you recomend that is not going to break the bank? I was looking at the Turnigy Accucell 6/80watt 10amp charger bit then im unsurd of how to match the power supply for the needs of the charger etc
    My current batteries are
    3x 3s 1300mah
    2x 3s 1600mah
    5x 4s 1600mah
These roughly take an hour each to charge and i also have the inconveniance of having to be with it constantly for safety and also have to keep swapping packs when they are done

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the reply Tourerjim. I'm really happy with my current batteries optipower ultra they really hold up well.
That charger is a good option but was hoping to have to spend a little less. I was thinking maybe a turnigy accucel 6 80watt with a parallel board but then it would need a power supply and I would need advice also with that

        You'll need about 120W of charging power (1.6 * 15.2 * 5 = 121.6) to do the 5x 4S 1600s in parallel.

I've just bought 2x ISDT Q6 plus chargers for field charging. I don't know if they're any good yet, but they're highly regarded and cheap. The Q6 lite (200W version) is only about £35.

You'll need a PSU, but that's true of any decent charger.

Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

Take a look here and pay particular attention to the wattage part. Eighty of them aren't go a long way with parallel charging.

            Hi

The ISDT chargers are excellent value for money. The Q6 300w combined with a Coolice PSU and a parallel board will be a great setup for around £100. If you can get a secondhand Coolice PSU it should cost around £70 in total.

              Thanks for the replies!
Il have a look at those. How do I know what power psu I need?? Is it as simple as for example
              if it's a 100watt charger I would need a 100w output psu? Or am I way off ?

Go more with the voltage, although it's all important. Look to have a little overhead with the typical packs you're going to be charging. So you're going to be charging 4S, go with something as a minimum of 15v and wattage has to be in line obviously if you're going to use the charger to it's max output and charging current. Most of us use server power supplys coupled together to give 24v output at 100 or so amps. Ian Coolice does a nice range of charger/power supply charging cases

Most batteries can be safely charged at 2C or more these days so it's worth going for a charger that will do parallel charging at 2C at least. For the batteries you have that means a 300W / 20A charger. I've had good luck with the Turnigy Reaktor 300W from Hobbyking. There are a few chargers of similar output that will do the job, the iSDT from Hobbyking looks like a great buy, probably better than the Reaktor, the 600W version looks like a steal!

                    Hi

The Coolice PSU’s are 12/24v and the wattage is 1000w. Seems overkill but you won’t need to upgrade it again if you upgrade your charger at a later date. Send Coolice a private message on here or search for Ian Contessa on Facebook. He will give you the specs on his PSU’s better than me and have up to date prices.

Looking at prices you might be looking at around £120 for a all new setup.

For the time being I would just be charging the 5 x 1600mah 4s packs at 1c max really until I get the funds to buy more batts.
Ive had a look on the cool ice site but can't find where he's based?! The prices a very reasonable

Thanks for all your help guys!! I really appreciate it.
being fairly new to the hobby there's a lot to get my head around and with something as potentially dangerous
as lipo charging etc I want to make sure I get it right and also don't want to buy twice when I find out what I've bought isn't sufficient as my battery collection grows

To charge what you have with 1C…
                          5 3S in parallell: 3 x 1,3 + 2 x 1,6 = 7,1 ampere
                          7,1 x ~12 ≈ 85 watt

                          5 4S in parallel: 5 x 1,6 = 8 ampere
                          8 x ~16 ≈ 128 watt

I would get a little more, to be able to add another battery...
2 chargers (1-6S?) with 10 amps, 150 watt each would do the job and a little more, if you need.

A 150 watt charger need a ≈180 watt power supply. You must add a little to compensate for loss in the charger.

Like suggested, two ISDT Q6 plus (á £45, 14 amp, 300 watt) and a 12-15 volt, 350 watt power supply would do the job.
Such setup would charge the 10 batteries from storage to balanced and full in mostly less than 45 minutes.

You need two parallel boards too.
