  • main gear LUBE!

    Hi guys

I have a questions about using lube on your main gears. Im keen try using some lube on my gear train to try and cut down the wear on the gear a bit. looking around I see a coupe of viable options in the dry fluid style line but at close to £15 seems a bit steep. my question is can I use any sort of ptfe dry grease style stuff like the muck off style?

    any thoughts chaps?

    Cheers

Unless the manufacturer for the heli specifies lubrication for main gears then I wouldnt. Greaselube can attract dirt and increase wear.

Setting the correct mesh between the motor pinion and main gear will be more valuable than trying to alleviate with lubrication. On my helis it says to only lube the tail gears and the small gears in the tail rotor gearbox.Nick Maxwell from thunder tiger has some youtube videos on setting meshing correctly and there are others with the paper method etc.

I use a natural silicone or pure divers silicone I got a pot (small) off ebay and lasts yonks for £3 as some stuff in lubes actually degrades plastic.

As a rule I've never found the need for it and my gears usually last ages. The only possible exception is the 2nd stage reduction on the big Goblins. Because it's 2 stage gearing the 2nd stage has very high torque and the gears take a hammering and wear out quicker than most. I still doubt that lube would help much with the plastic gears and it makes an awful mess. Lube is required if you use the metal gears on the Goblin.

There have been threads on Helifreaks about this and some type of dry chain lube was recommended. I don't remember the exact details as I already had the dry fluid.

You might read a bit of this and see if they're talking about the same stuff: https://www.helifreak.com/showthread...highlight=lube

I have used various different lubricants. PTFE spray, WD40 silicone spray, SAMS rubber lube, Vaseline etc. They all seem to work all right. Some are messier than others.
I have never experienced any gear wear. (Except as a result of sudden contact with the ground).

I've never lubed any gears on any Heli. I've never had gears wear and I used to fly shit loads (my skill level would call me a liar). I've never seen a build video or instructions stating otherwise. I do (did) grease up servo gears though as they are always greased up when you take them apart. The only gears I had issues with were the little ones on the gaui 200 after the slightest of 'bad landings' TT hence I converted back to belt.

Before the advent of rescue in flybarless units, you should've crashed before you wear a main gear out

thunder tiger stated that the main gear on the e550 should be lubed every 4-6 flights
the electric conversions on the hirobo Freya need the main gear lubricating to stop main gear wear
nitro models never needed lubricating as they were self lubricating
