The retainer or ball cage doesn't have to be the plastic version, ran for years without OS bearings. make sure you treat rear bearings as consumables and not wait until you hear the rattle of death before replacing. make sure you don't buy the clipped cage as I said above, the riveted ones are fine. I've seen the clips snap off leading to engine failure. I've also seen the balls disintegrate in a phenolic cage, regular inspection and changing is the best form of preventing failure. If it's rusty in there then it's going to lead to premature failure, the bigger the engine and bigger the bang the more load is put on the balls and most are case hardened so are prone to chipping, leading to complete failure. If it sounds bad then it normally is, don't tempt fate and fly it will only end in a written off engine or at best it won't tune and you'll end up with hours of chasing a tune.Originally posted by andypaddlerking View PostI thought you needed a plastic cage for the os engines all the ones you have listed have a metal cage? anyone know where you can get bearing with the plastic retainer? cheers

That's the one I have in my Align 91 and it transformed the engine, it's now quiet and powerful and is nearly 600 flights old on the original liner/piston/ring.Originally posted by waveydavey View Post

I'm with Dave on this one- prevent rather than cure. I change my 91 rear bearing every year no matter how it sounds and they always look corroded when I remove them. It's worth it for what is only a 90 min job and a cost of less than a tenner. I've flown nitro's for 6 years now and using this formula I have never had a bearing failure and burn about a gallon a month. A new piston/liner/ring would be over a 100 quid if you get a bearing failure. My two pence worthOriginally posted by waveydavey View PostThe retainer or ball cage doesn't have to be the plastic version, ran for years without OS bearings. make sure you treat rear bearings as consumables and not wait until you hear the rattle of death before replacing. make sure you don't buy the clipped cage as I said above, the riveted ones are fine.
