  • All my lipos are dead!

Wow! Well, I've not been able to get out flying this year. My lipos were all on 40% storage charge in an ammo box, I came to charge up this morning only to find all 8 have puffed out like barrels and look fit to burst!

Needless to day I can't use them, HK no longer do these cheap lipos anymore (after this I'm not sure I'd trust them anyway) and the more expensive ones are too pricey for me!

Anyone else had lipos puff out after being on storage charge?

If they are the Nano-Tech ones, then yes I have, and thats why I don't use them anymore.
Have found cheap LiPo's to be a false economy.
Only fly Optipower now as they are a good battery at a reasonable price (not the cheapest and definitely not the dearest).
Also their customer service is excellent (IMHO)

These are just the stock 30c turnigy blues. The mad thing is I've got a load of even cheaper turnigy 3000mah ones for my 500 and they're all totally fine.

            Lipos

All of your lipos have puffed? That's unlikely to happen to them all at once. They must have got too hot during storage or too damp.

              Kept in an ammo box (lid popped to let any gasses out) in my conservatory. All my other lipos are in the same place and yet only these ones have gone. This is one of the worst ones;

You buy cheap Lipos this is what happens , I've brought them in the past and had the same problem thinking I was saving money . Your better off buying either good second ones and they do come up on here occasionally , or new ones . I still have packs I brought 4 years ago and there still as good as new . Storage and charging is always paramount , I storage charge mine when I return from any flying and keep them somewhere dry and at room temperature , leaving them in a case or box in the garage/shed is not ideal .

Weeeeeeell, not entirely. I have Turnigy blues that are 5 years old now and still going and have had an Opti that puffed in less than a year, I've had Gens Ace's go bad, Haiyins that went bad, Nanotechs that have lasted for ages with all sorts of abuse and then some that bit the dust early on. I think it's just luck of the draw (assuming that normal care is taken in charging/ discharging and storage charging). There may be some percentage of better reliablility with more expensive LiPos but it's not a huge percentage.

How hot/cold does your conservatory get?

The excuse that this is what cheap packs do is BS. I have 5 year old cheapo lipos which are absolutely fine. The fact that all 8 of your packs have done it is suspicious.

That's what I was going to ask, and then my browser malfunctioned for some reason. One thing that really ages LiPos is wide temperature changes like from day to night etc.

Not fair or strictly true. Put optis/other high end, and I'm pretty sure that they'd do the same in fluctuating conditions.

                        And it's bought, not brought

I've got about 20 Turnigy and Zippy LiPos up to 5 years old and none have 'puffed' at all. Some admittedly have started to show their age in terms of performance, but no puffing. After 5 years I cant complain. Sometimes you get bad batteries with any brand, for sure I've seem a number of reports about higher end LiPos like Optis and Thunder Power puffing prematurely.

A conservatory is a reall bad evironmnt to store LiPos I as with all the glass temperature tends to fluctuate widely and frequently. I'd suspect the storage conditions and not the battery brand was the most likely culprit.

Just to add Gaz, I have a pair of 5000mah Turnigy blues I'd be happy to give you free, simply because I have more LiPos than I need now and have been moving away from the 5000s and using 4000s instead. The only snag is I'm way down on the Kent coast and can't really post them. These are the 30-40Cs and still have plenty of punch (for me anyway) or you could thrash the heck out of them and if they die it's no biggie.
