  • A year out

Hi,Just looked at my heli`s yesterday after looking the other way for around a year due to work.I wish I could pack in work to concentrate on heli`s for a year.So checked out all three heli`s and the biggest issue seems to be dust,so all good.Lifted the 180 off in kitchen and flew out the back door,I realised straight away I was "out of the loop",so I thought I`ll get the sim on for a while, not been on that for a year either and when I click it does`nt work,so I better get a new sim! so looking for sim advice,I had pheonix, but I understand there are better ones now,a bit of guidance would be appreciated, cheers! On the up side my foamy wott4 flew well, but bored in 5 mins!

If youre looking for a dedicated Heli Sim then I'd recommend 'Next' Simulator

neXt - CGM rc Heli Flight Simulator

Next allows you to download a trial that you can fly for 2 minutes (before resetting) to try it before buying the license for it.

or if you'd like to have the option of either Heli's or planks then Realflight is excellent.

Im not a great fan of Phoenix these days and I did try AccuRC but it was too power hungry even for my Alienware high spec laptop.

    Hope that helps

Great to have you back Rob, have missed reading your posts. Work can be a pain but I have recently retired from work and still do not seem to have any extra flying time!

Heli's & photography is my hobby & when we moved (4 year ago now) i took about a year out to get work done on our home & rest of thw time with hobbies but after several months they didn't seem to be a hobby anymore & virtually gave up, once all the work was done on the home i couldn't wait to get back into work & next thing my hobbies came flooding back so my advise is to keep it as a hobby.

Phoenix is still not bad and on the plus side it is not very CPU intensive. You can download the latest version or order a DVD pretty cheap. I'm using AccuRC mostly but revisited Phoenix a while back when I was commuting between London and the Kent coast a lot and it was great to be able to run it on my cheapy laptop.

Thanks guys,I just got too busy to fit anything in!,every time I had a spare hour there was always some other thing that needed doing.Im having saturdays off now though so fingers crossed for some decent weather,in an independant scotland the sun would shine every day of course!!,,lol better not go there!.Any way Im off untill monday so I got my 500 out this morning and realised the biggest problem is my brain.
When I last flew the 500 I was kind of over the "OMG its much bigger than my 180cfx", thing and was getting used to it such that it seemed smaller with every flight, this morning though as I lifted off I got the fear straight away.so put it back down.It took me a battery of hovering around a bit to get confident enough to up and away, but even then I knew I was`nt "in the zone" with my concentration as I was all over the place, half flying and half saving.
I think I would rather have a spirit on my heli than have Angelina Jolie in my bed, must have used it 10 times this morning alone.
So if it stays reasonably calm Im out after lunch with the wott4 and the logo,,oMG THE LOGO!!!,,,,keep calm Bill keep calm! and bl**dy concentrate!
Thanks again for the welcome back

Welcome back! On the sim front I can highly recommend Heli-X. Having started with NeXt for the first year I switched to Heli-X last winter and found it considerably more realistic, particularly when learning funnels and flying smaller models. NeXt is okay too, but for me Heli-X beats it hands down on the physics. There are free demos of both but the Heli-X demo doesn't do the full program much justice (using a slow old "cartoon like" Logo model and a low-res field). The NeXt demo is better (basically the full version on a time limit) and that's what swung me to choosing NeXt in the first place. But I switched to Heli-X after I got very frustrated trying to learn inverted funnels on NeXt and I was pleasantly surprised at the quick progress I made from that point onward. Oddly though I can now fly funnels no problem in NeXt, but I think Heli-X behaves closer to real life - seems a little more forgiving with a longer hang time in the air during most moves (obviously relative to model size). Only other sim I have is Aerofly RC 7, but I rarely use it - seems way behind the other two for helis. I only bought it for learning to fly planks.

                          Big fan of next myself

                          iv used phoenix/accurc/realflight and next

phoenix - was good when it was new
accurc - you will spend more time setting it up than flying
realflight - really good sim but you need a top spec pc to run it well
next - plug and fly with good graphics, only down side is no planes where realflight you can have anything.. even lawnmowers lol

if it Is helis tho id recommend next all day has a lot of realism in there and some good learning tutorials
