  • New drone laws coming in

Finally the government is doing something about morons flying their drones to close to airports etc. The off shoot is that anyone who buys a drone from the time they make the law live, they will have to take a test and register their drone. What concerns me is there isn't a definitive definition of what a drone is. The generic definition is a unmanned flying vehicle, which can mean any REMOTE CONTROL model, helicopter, plane etc. hat means I may be chased out of my local park for flying a blade nano.cpx.

That would only apply if someone actually enforces the law. How many people do you see driving whilst on the mobile!!!!

Given they have yet to positively identify a single drone following any of the claimed incidents (but plenty of plastic bags and balloons) this is more about being seen to be doing something than it is about actual safety unfortunately...

Well there was the guy who's 'drone' (aka a delta wing) crashed into water over the BAE Submarine base in Cumbria, got a £4000 fine. He maintained he wasn't flying it as it was out of control and went off on its own, but a failure to attend court was found guilty in his absence.

True, there are one or two like that, but mostly I was referring to the justification for this being based on the reports of 'near-miss' incidents at or near airports.

arby, it is very difficult to catch a drone operator ... if you YT search you can see lots of flights over London and up the Shard. The case you quote I think is two different operators. One was a plane and apparently it flew along a bridge out of control ... how do I know, I spoke to the CAA rep when I went to court to listen to the case against the Notts guy. He just kept on flying despite being warned to stop on multiple occasions.

The next 'wave' is all the people that buy a DJI Mavic. Most of the people are not modelers and just have the desire to fly as far away as possible and as high as possible ... We all know people don't want to fly over fields ... that's boring!

Nice chap but knows nothing at all about rc models and isnt particularly interested in learning, Which is probably a large part of the problem!

Any actual evidence to back this up?

I know that the EASA is Europe have drafted up new proposed legislation but that will effect RC helis and planes as much as it does 'drones' (they are all the same as far as the legislation is concerned) and as this stage there is nothing proposing that hobbyist flyers will have to register or do any training. The latest update on the legislation is here: https://bmfa.org/News/News-Page/Arti...rototype-Rules

Three thousand feet at what 300mile an hour, could someone really identify a DJI whatmy thingy at that sort of speed. Could they possibly be seeing military stuff

                        Edit : 250mph.

The Thing is Dave we all know its going on you only have to look on youtube. so for me its just a matter of time before someone gets hurt. we can all say i don't think they would have seen it ? but the airprox report isn't done by the pilot of that aircraft. and they where convinced enough to compile that report to back him up.

how close do you need to be to city airport

My point was they are so definite that it was a drone, 2 blokes in an ally tube travelling at 250mph identifying without doubt that it's a hobby sized drone maybe, something 300mm square or so. I'm not saying it doesn't happen and it needs to stop but I do question the so called reports and their validity.

I find it difficult to believe that it was a drone.
It seems from the report that only the first officer saw it.
He must have had visual contact for a very brief period.
2600 feet seems very high. I can't see the point of even the most reckless amateur flying at that height over central London and so close to an airport.
