Current pricing in the U.K. Warehouse allows you to do this for around £28 per 6s 5000 for 20c packs. Postage is unrestricted so you're not stuck having to use expensive couriers. There are a number of advantages of this setup in that you can always split the pack to allow transport on an aircraft and, if a cell goes down, you can just replace half the pack.
Which is rather cheaper than the imported 6S 5Ah packs are working out at - but has the [arguable] downside of the connectors, etc.

+ the fact that 20C packs on a 550 will only be good for mild sport flying...

          Coxy,

What package value or how many lipos was this based on? Assume it was about £160 or so if based on 20%.
Just trying to work out a per lipo cost of the importation exercise and if it is worth the effort.

          Thanks

Well, the Fed Ex package arrived this morning. [Quick.]

Maybe I'll see a separate duty invoice, or such.

Fingers crossed you somehow avoided import charges, it would be great if this was the case!

It would be nice, but highly unlikely with FedEx as they are not going to pass up an opportunity to charge for the clearance

The invoice will be in the mail any day now...

                  That's my suspicion.

TBH it *is* a legitimate charge.

I'm more familiar with Parcel Force's practice where they hold your goods 'for ransom' until you pay the charges. I've never yet had an invoice after delivery but there again I've not received anything from Fedex before.

I guess we cant really argue with getting charged VAT but the 'handling charge' is a bit hard to swallow. I mean, isn't 'handling' what Hobbyking paid the courier to do?

I am just trying to work out what the admin/handling charge is from FedEx for importing lipo's from HK. is it based on per package or a percentage.

                      Thanks

FWIW, the logic such as it is, is that Hobbyking only pays FedEx to ship your package from A to B.

The importer (the person who orders the goods) is responsible for customs clearance.

You can arrange your own clearance but it will take time and effort to do so, so if it has not been indicated to FedEx that you are arranging your own clearance, then FedEx provides the clearance service on behalf of the importer (you), at a 'small' charge.

Usually 2.5% of the VAT charge or £12 whichever is higher.

I have just received this from FedEx:-

                            Good afternoon

                            Thank you for your email.

We cannot confirm the exact amount as the information you provided in the initial email may not be the information that the shipper puts on the paperwork in regards to customs value for clearance, we cannot g u a r a n t e e , there can sometimes be a clearance advancement fee of £12.00 which usually only applies for low value shipments, if the shipment is held for payment then the advancement fee is not applied it would just be the VAT/DUTY amounts.

The VAT is worked out at 20 % anything being imported above the value of £15.00 it will attract VAT and any import above the value of £135.00 will attract Duty, but it can only be calculated once the paperwork has been submitted and depending on the value which the shipper puts on the paperwork for customs.

I know the import duty is 2.7% plus 20% VAT but the above seems to state that there is no additional charge from Fedex

In my experience Fedex always tacks on their own £12 'clearance' fee (or whatever they're calling it). You can avoid this by setting up an account with them and placing with them some money to use for customs (which will be VAT) payment. But for most of us we just don't import enough stuff to make it worth setting up a customs clearance account.

The bottom line is you'll pay VAT plus an additional 12 quid to Fedex.
