  • Sim questions...

After my latest effort to support the RC heli spare parts industry today I really need to get a decent sim.

Currently using ClearviewSE, mainly because it is free bar the cost of the different helis.

However, I realise the more expensive sims will be more realistic, what are the pros and cons of the different ones out there?

Initially I'd like to be able to program it to accurately mimic my 450L, simply to improve my landings!

    Thanks in advance,

    Nick

The top ones at the moment are RealFlight, neXt and Heli-X. RealFlight and Heli-X have probably the best reputation for realism, RealFlight has the biggest selection of models and flying sites (and a forum where you can swap models too), plus a pretty good online multiplayer mode. Heli-X is getting some good feedback on Helifreak at the moment for the training modes it includes, that's probably its biggest strength.

Both can be pretty realistic, although you usually want to go a size or two larger on the sim, small models are never the best. I tend to use a 500 or 550 size model to practice stuff for my X3's.

If you're looking to upgrade your sim, it might also be worth checking out the "from tail in to funnels" thread over on helifreak. A lot of people have had some really good results after following some of the tips there.

I've used 2 sims extensively, NeXt and Heli-X. Both will achieve your main aim of learning to fly, but I find Heli-X to be the most realistic and has some great training modes too. There are free demo versions of both these sims, but the Heli-X demo doesn't really do it any justice. The full version is miles better. The NeXt demo is basically the full version with a time limit. Both are keenly priced too and you can purchase them directly online. You just need a suitable usb dongle to attach your Tx. I use my Spektrum DX8 with a usb dongle from HobbyKing, which was about £10 with postage. I would recommend Heli-X as it's very hard to beat for the money. NeXt is pretty good too, although strangely enough it doesn't simulate landings very well at all, the helis tip over far too easily!

Blade 180 CFX - field beater for new moves
Blade Red Bull BO-105 CB 130 X - scale fun flying at the field when the tail isn't broken, which is not often.
      Blade mCPX - sold

Blade Nano QX - house fly of choice
Blade mCX2 - retired but will be back when the kids get a bit bigger

      Spektrum DX8 - for everything

Out of interest what are the downsides to the demo version of Heli-X? Reason I ask is ive been using this for ages with the stock demo Logo 600 and never got round to getting the full version and you've got me wondering if I'm missing out on something. I mean I can live without saving settings and can live with the same scene and heli, but for general practice is there some other features in the full version?

Used realflight, Phoenix and currently NeXt. I think I prefer NeXt although Phoenix offers you the plane side of it if you're into it. Shameless plug I've got a spare Phoenix dongle which you could prise from my fingers in exchange for a few quid

The full version of Heli-X has far more realistic hi-res graphics and some great scenery, but more importantly a far better choice of heli models. That demo Logo 600 behaves like it's in slow motion to me, it's just too easy to fly. The other Logo models are much better so maybe this was an old Heli-X model? I use the Goblin 380, OXY 3 and some of the other larger helis and they all look and fly really well.

If you compare the NeXt demo (which is actually the full version) with the Heli-X demo you would quickly conclude that NeXt is much better looking and more dynamic. That's exactly what I did and I did choose NeXt as my first sim on that very basis. Then over the winter I read somewhere about Heli-X being much better with the full version so I got curious and gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised and haven't looked back since.
