  • Flying glasses

Hi just wondered if anyone used shades while flying reason i ask is i have quite light sensitive eyes and while flying i constantly squint and it becomes difficult and uncomfortable flying while trying to watch my heli zooming about.
I tried the sunglasses i have in my car but they were way to dark so just put up with it last year so today i went up for a flight and after one battery it was too much there was a lot of bright cloud cover and i could barely keep my eyes open looking up at it up there so came home.
When i got home i remembered i had a pair of ex military laser eye protection goggles so went back up again and gave it a go and although the filters in them made everything a bright yellow i found it was very comfortable looking up at the sky while flying although i did look like a mad professor with them on.
Question is does anyone else have a issue flying against bright sky and if so what type of shading glasses do you wear.
    Thanks for any input
    David.

I can't fly without sun glasses on for the same reason. I tried some ski goggles one winter but didn't get on with the yellow glare. I just wear basic uv protection glasses.

Oakley e wires with polarised lenses, though I guess any sunglasses your comfortable with looking at the sky with would do just to get the glare factor reduced.

I think most people find it hard to fly against a bright white sky - the heli becomes a silhouette and that makes it easier to become dis-orientated.
I don't find sunglasses any help TBH.
Some hunting / shootin / fishing glasses have red / amber / yellow tinted lenses that can help a bit, especially if they match the canopy colour, but it always feels odd to me.
TBH, I haven't found anything better than flying against a blue sky with the sun shining on my chopper.

I have a pair of yellow tinted polarised glasses I've used a few times, they cut out a lot of glare and really make the model stand out.

I have the same problem. My eyes are sensitive and white clouds seem to make it worse.

I've been wearing Maui Jim Peahi sunglasses with Bronze lenses for a few years now and I still think they're awesome for flying. They literally highlight anything Red or Orange. Also the wraparound lenses give a very wide peripheral vision. Expensive but worth every penny imho

Unless it's virtually dark I quite literally cannot fly without sunglasses on! I've gone through a few different pairs and in the end I bought a pair of light amber tinted ones with small lenses on the arms. I picked them up at Weston Park last year for 20quid!

The 3 main reasons these glasses work well seem to be the polarised lenses (reduce glare) the amber tint (stops the model from becoming a silhouette) and the little side bits stop the sunlight coming in and making you see your eyes in a reflection!

All in these glasses made a big difference and the amber tint makes yellow and orange canopies stand out really well too.

Hi thanks for the replys i guess most people dont actually fly with the naked eye and most of you go for a yellow/bronze color.
I must admit i didnt really want to fly using glasses but it seems to be the only way forward especially after i tried my laser proof goggles yesterday and found it did like a lot of you have said enhances the model in the sky just got to get used to it.
I think for the price those flightmaster ones look good with the selection of lenses that come with them.
Hopefully this summer i will have a squint free more comfortable fly.
                  Thanks for the replys

The most important bit is the polarised lens, they cut glare and make things more HD lol

I've flown the Rapid Eyewear Nimbus for years now. Usually with the brown tint polarised lens as they suit a wide range of skies, the darker polarised lenses on the two days a year when it's really sunny.

I must buy some new frames though. The paint it flaking on mine now.

I use grey prescription sunglasses unless it's really dull. Tried flying without a couple of times and had to stop half way through because of watery and uncomfortable eyes.
