If the motor is flicked backwards just hard enough to drive the piston up towards TDC the resultant reverse compression can be enough to drive the piston back down in the proper rotation with enough momentum to start the motor in the correct direction. Larger and heaver props help as they increase the momentum of rotation. Sometimes an engine will start backwards when flicked in the correct rotation especially if its not flicked firmly enough. And some engines will be more prone to this than others.

Some people might have found an accident 'entertaining' I'm sure but having seen first hand and close up the damage a spinning prop can do I have learnt a lesson! To try and start the engine as he did was plain stupid,if it had have started it would have come straight towards him until another guy thought he'd better hold it for him.Originally posted by SGD View PostUnderstand your concern buy but I wouldn't post a video showing any personal injury and certainly wouldn't have titled it "For your entertainment!"A member of the Dewsbury & District Model Club,a great place to fly

A club mate lost half he's index finger at our club open day.
He had starter and restraint, but didn't bother to hold the plane behind the prop.
As a result,
The plank jumped into life a lurched forward.
He's index finger was just pointing in the right direction as he removed the starter away for it to bite him.
Although the BMFA duely obliged with some compensation for him.
He hasn't really flown much to this day.Heli's: Trex 700 - os gt15hz : Goblin 380 & MSH Brain - Trex 450 Ikon : Blade 550x & 180cfx
