  • Optiguard / scorpion Bug

heard another incident today, where a battery pack has come unplug etc.

i use either a opti guard or a scorpion backup guard prices vary starting £21 to £40, i don't understand why people are not using them. surely its a small price to pay and safety as well is another thing to consider.
I use mainly Kontronik on most model which i trust the becs but you only need a pack to come unplugged and its all over resulting in a crash with no control.

food for thought guys and gals.

Think you might want to point this out the person in question, Optiguard £40, his repair bill £180. No brainer to me but not all .

Though making sure the battery couldn't come unplugged in the first place might have been an option? It really shouldn't happen if the connectors are in good condition.

even if you have lots of models, you could get away with afew and swap them around as required the bug is very easy and put velcro on back and one plug.

I was thinking about this recently (swapping one ultraguard around more than one model) because I worry that when I have helis that are not flown as regularly the LiPo on the ultraguard can die, so maybe sharing one where possible is a good strategy.

As you know I was flying my 700n last weekend without one and the heli destroyed itself due to be unable to cut the engine, it will be the last heli I fly without one and you're right that it's a no brainer. Made marginally more annoying by the fact that I had 2 X Optiguards on the shelf, doh.

Just took mine out of the packet. Are Helijive BEC's protected from the back voltage these things will pump out when you disconnect the main battery?

I think it's fair to say we all take it for granted sometimes until it goes wrong..... wasn't that the case for you also Mr B when your KT esc Bec failed? If I recall it was only then you invested in backup guards, in hind sight we all should have learnt lessons from your indecent.

As I said in the "did you fly today" post "silly me for not fitting the Opti guard which is still in the box"

The EC5's were brand new in excellent condition, why did they pull out in flight? well probably because I never pushed them in far enough.... what can I say..... you never crash intentionally.

Now back to licking my wounds.........

I remember looking into that some time ago and the consensus was that it's not a problem. But my routine is when I go out to fly I connect the main flight packs first and then the ultraguard and when I land I disconnect the ultraguard first.

The Jives have always been totally OK having a buffer pack connected so I wouldn't think the ultraguard would be doing anything different in that regard.

I had one of my connectors desolder itself in flight at AIR last year. It's the only time I've had that happen in hundreds of flights but had I not had an optiguard/buffer that 700 would have dropped like a dead pigeon. That and the fact I learned to auto because if you can't auto rotate, you might have all the best gear in the hobby but you'll still be screwed. A buffer is not a get out of jail free card but when you really need one you'll be glad you fitted it

i already had backups or bugs on non kontroniks models i.e. castle, and after that bec failure on spool up , opted to fit to kontroniks also.
