A brilliant piece of engineering. I would love to have the facilities and the skill to do that. I am mightily impressed.

Please keep us up to date with the build and then the flying.

Wow, thank you all for the interest in my 550 build project,I basically brought a Trex 550L Dominator kit to use as a donor for parts like gears, motor and electronics. I did change the 90 Talon ESC to 120 Edge as I believe the 90 to be a bit marginal although I have had no problems on a 550 DFC and 550L Dominator fitted with a speed fuselage. Thanks for the mention of air flowover the ESC, There is plenty of room above the ESC to fit a fan unit which I will do as I already have a milling program written for a 40mm fan mount over an Ice120. (I fitted a fan on a 700 when I fitted the speed fuselage and had to move the ESC to under the canopy.

I do use stainless steel Torx screws on non-stressed areas and high tensile 12.9 cap screws on the more stressed areas. I use pan head torx and skim the heads true to the thread, this allows them to fit in the frame washers which as you can see in the picture I’ve run out and need to make some more.

The fixed mount for the EC5 is made of Delrin so being aplastic is nicely insulated and with a small cut out in the top surface makes removing the battery connection very easy with a pair of ‘C’ clip pliers. I machine the wire exit holes 0.2mm smaller than the wire this way the wire is gripped into the connector in case of a dodgy solder joint… I’ve noticed on myGoblin 770 the EC5 connectors get mighty warm so I will possibly go up to a 6.5mm connector. On the 12s machines I make a double EC5 mount incorporating the ‘Y’ link from + to –

I’ll keep you all up to date with the build that is very nearly there now, it’s been dry assembled so just have a few more machining bits to do then a final build with lock tight etc.…….. Then it will be time for the maiden flight. I hope it flies well as I have already got a 700 Dominator Top kit ready to donor for the next build………….
Thank you all once again, I feel very touched that everybody has shown so much interest.

It's not everyday we get someone doing something different. Maj and Rob Morris launched a few electric to nitro mods and a chap called Hayden (Volt) was doing some great stuff with large 1000 blades. That seems to have stopped lately, he moved off to Australia I think and haven't heard much from him. But that's about it so it's great to see a build of someones own design, and maiden
