  • Back in the game....

    Hi all,
im just getting back into helis from quite some time out, misses bought me a little bird for crimbo and im smitten again, tbh im quite impressed with this micro heli, it's a wltoys v977, brushless motor etc tx looks tacky but by god this heli is insanely fast...... Anyway im after a 200 size heli, not stupid crazy money im not THAT smitten yet,
ive owned a master cp, trex 450, blade 130x, trex 550. Etc over the yrs, most of the larger were shelf queens I have to say.. I like smaller helis more then the bigger birds, so if you were buying a 200 size what in today's age would you opt for guys, looking for value for money and parts readily available with upgrades also to hand,
any help guys or advice is much appreciated

Best 200/300 size for an experienced pilot is the Oxy3 if you're comfortable building yourself. A cheaper BNF alternative in the same class is the new Blade 270CFX.

Shouldn't be that hard to get hold of an Oxy. You can order from them directly if you need (with 2 day shipping I think), but Fastlads usually have them in stock here in the UK:
          Fast Lad Performance
          Helis: Oxy 2 FE / Oxy 2 Sport / Protos 380 / Oxy 4 Max / Gaui X3 380mm
          Electronics:
          Spartan VX1e / Spartan VX1n / Spartan VX1p / MSH Brain2 mini / Jeti DS-14
          Sims: Realflight / AccuRC
/ Phoenix RC (Wireless) | AccuRC (Wireless) | Realflight (Wireless)

The 270cfx is some serious bit of kit Deffo one that i will add one day!. But it's a little bit bigger then I was after, something master cp size is great, but ive owned one of these in the past and it felt "heavy" and upgrades like CNc parts are pretty hard to find in the uk, so anything else people have had or read good things about?

Consider a 180CFX then? It swings 155mm blades by default, but (like mine) can be stretched to 180mm blades with the Lynx stretch kit. It's an awesome little heli - marginally bigger than the 130X it replaced, but a million miles from it in terms of design, build and ability. For example, compared to the old 130X, it's now an all-CF body with rotary servos, a Castle ESC with governor mode enabled, piro-comp in the AS3X FBL unit etc.

              Check out : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcQop3HmJ40

EDIT : I should mention an Oxy-2 is in the works apparently. Although, again there is the Oxy-3 which is stocked by Fast Lads.

EDIT2 : There is of course still the Align 250 DFC. Though honestly I'm mentioning that only for completeness. I'm not fan of Align in general, and certainly not of the 250DFC in particular.

Actually Oxy 3 parts are very easy to get hold of (Fast Lads in 24 hrs or direct from factory in 48 hrs) and reasonably priced, although it's an expensive kit to get up and running. Try finding a reasonably priced battery for a 270 CFX!

But anyway I agree with Tom above. From what you have said, the Blade 180 CFX should fit your bill better than either. It's considerably smaller, much less expensive and flies great for its size. It's no beginner heli for sure, but if you were happy flying your 130X it should be no problem. Another alternative I'm surprised nobody has mentioned is the Blade 230S. That would be less of a handful than the 180 CFX if you want something a bit easier to fly, but still capable of 3D.

Thanks for all your help and advice people , think i will be heading down the 180 cfx route, for the money it's a good piece of kit by all accounts, and parts are quite reasonable compared to other 'well known' makes

Good choice, it's a fantastic heli with loads of spares available and plenty of "hop ups". As with all micros, most of these are just bling, but some I've found do actually make a difference.

The first is CF blades. The stock plastic blades are fine, but I found (heavier) CF blades made the heli noticeably more stable and actually removed a minor cyclic wobble I had on mine out of the box.

The second is servo saver horns, or alternatively, you can do the "servo saver mod" which is actually quite easy and achieves the same result - which is that the horns slip in a crash rather than taking out servo gears.

Beyond that, I personally haven't found any major "upgrade" that isn't just bling - that said, I quite like bling and have bought a fair bit for mine!

Nothing wrong with bling Tom. Pretty hard to bling a micro without loss in power but the 180 seems over powered if anything!., I have read a few reviews on tail wag on pitch pumps etc, you had any issues?, I know it was a diff beast altogether but the 130x was a pain in the arse for constant wagging

180 is the best thing for it's size, you can fly that in a tennis court size area no prob. 250 size needs a football pitch to really let it go. I sold mine 180 for the Oxy, they probably have very similar crash costs if your using the carbon blades on the 180. Something worth considering as blade helis often hit the ground due to a 50p gear or something

You might be able to pick a second hand 250 size on here for a good price, worth a ask as you get more reliability.. if that was the size you were originally looking for

The early batch 180CFX's had an issue with a random tail kick, but that was solved with a firmware update. As for tail wag, I think because of the small size, you always get a very small amount if you hold it in a hover and look carefully. Fundamentally, as the tail parts are so small compared to 550+ class helis, the tail will never be as rock solid as those larger helis - especially in a bit of side wind. However, most rarely spend their time holding a heli in a stable, tail-in hover - and I've never had the tail blow-out on me, even with fast, backwards circuits.

Here is mine ... with Zeal CF blades as the only functional mod at the time (plus bling skids! ) I've since added the Lynx stretch boom and 180mm plastic blades.

Thanks Paz, and Tom nice bit of flying there fella, space isn't a prob my landlord also my nieghbour has over 1000 acres of arable land so im spoilt when a field is less then 50 metres from my door, like I said earlier i have owned bigger helis but ive enjoyed the smaller less hassle birds, i prob will at some stage grow a fleet like before, this bug is costly lol, but for now to get my fix the 180 seems the part, it may not look as sexy as a goblin but at least I haven't got to take out a morgage when i bin it tail first....
