  • Heli hovers but rotor not horizontal

Something does not look right on my Blade 230S.
When holding a tail in hover at eye level I have noticed that the main rotor is not horizontal.
The right hand edge of the spinning rotor is definitely lower than the left hand edge.
I noticed it while flying in Stability Mode and thought it may be linked to that mode, but it is the same in Intermediate Mode.
I was flying indoors in a large gym, so wind was not a factor.
It hovers well without drifting but does not look right.
    Any ideas anyone?

It caught me out when I first started too. If the disc was perfectly horizontal, the heli would be blown left by the tail rotor (which is pushing a free-floating body in mid-air). The lean to the right compensates against this tail thrust.

Don't worry, it's a very commonly asked question. I thing pretty much everyone who flies helis is surprised when they first see it. For some reason the lean seems more marked in micro helis than in the big stuff.

Can't recommend this YouTube series enough. As a beginner's intro to rotary flight on YT, I think it's unsurpassed

Thanks for that URL Tom, a subject I've been planning to get my head around for some time. Can you recommend any book on the (full size) subject?

It's not a text book, far from it but I can recommend a book called Chickenhawk by Robert Mason. It has some pretty tough warfare descriptions in it but it gives a very good idea about what it was like to learn and fly combat missions during the 1970's.
It had a significant impact on me. As a result the Huey is my favourite (full size) helicopter. The one in my avatar is based in Lancashire.

Fantastic book Mike that I read some time ago, easily the very best of the genre and I've read many, many of them. The sequal is well worth a read too but doesn't involve any flying. I've had a couple or three hours in the back of Hueys but the one I'd really have loved to experience is the Bell 47 of MASH fame.

Tomatwalden....you have a disposition of steel! You don't happen to be a college lecturer or teacher of some sort?

The same reason why it drifts left when you take off too!

No, I work for a UK telco.
