  • Brushless motors or not brushless motors. That is the question.

Whats the advantage of a brushless motor over a brushed version?
Are they that important to a relative newbie like myself or just for the seasoned flyer?

    Cheers

Brushless tend to be more efficient, and the only maintenance required is usual bearing changes.

Brushed motors need their brushes checking and replacing where necessary.

The ESCs (speed controllers) are different, as the driving required of the two types of motors is different.

You will usually only find brushed motors in either cheap toy helicopters, or very small helicopters these days.

As above, plus you get far more power from a similar size/weight of brushless motor compared to brushed.

It's really a moot point these days because all helis except the cheaper end 'toy grade' micros come with brushless motors. Once upon a time there used to be a price premium for brushless motors and controllers but these days that's not true.

For the main drivetrain brushless motors are what you want, you'll find all but the smallest micro electric heli's are powered by brushless outrunner motors.

For servos there is a little more choice. Brushless tends to deliver more torque, while a coreless servo can often offer higher speed and acceleration. In servos both are extremely reliable technologies and you can really pick whichever suits your needs. Many servo manufacturers still have a choice of both technologies in their range.
