  • YEP esc

I am going to need a new ESC and the YEP seems good but, motor timing first , where can I find it and what is it and how vital is it to get right please. I have been searching for a couple of hours but there is no such info about the Eflight 520

The YEP has an 'auto' timing option that has always worked fine for me. Failing that the YEP default is '18' which also seems to work fine in most cases.

Hi,one of the vids I looked at said don't use it and it was on another line ,I think, but if 18 is default then I will go with that.pity there is no manual or PDF on it.whether or how it will show if not correct I don't know

General formula is : Kv x Volts (nominal you are using) x Pole count / 20

        So, 1320kv x 22.2 volts x 8 poles /20 = 11721Hz = 12Khz

          Tom,
That's the formula for PWM frequency, not for timing. They are totally different and unrelated variables.

FWIW it's only really a ballpark estimate for PWM, higher is still fine.

Ok fellas thanks. If you have any other bits of info on this ,can you pass them on as my mate who is even more confused than me, is also going to try and set it up on his new Trex clone 600 so hopefully between us we can work all these bits out

Just looked ta my YEp programme card (make sure you order one of these as they are cheap) and the values available for timing are 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 & 30 degrees. Usually upto 18 is for in runner motors and the 24/30 is for outrunner maybe the other way round (Check). Eflite motors I've had in blade helis the bearings have been made of cheese so beware!. If you are getting a YEP ESC from HK then take a lok at the SK3 helidrive motors as they are actually quite good.

Hi , so the next question is whats the difference between out and in motors please. I have heard this about Blade motor bearings before so maybe will upgrade. My old mate has just got a motor from HK , along with the heli an fixings are only 18 instead of 25 mm apart so a bit of a minefield isn't it

Virtually all heli motors outside of 'toy grade' helis with brushed motors are outrunners. You can get brushless inrunners but you wont normally find them on helis, so you don't really need to worry about the difference.

                      But FWIW
                      • Inrunners have the magnets on the inside and the windings on the outside. The magnets rotate inside diving a shaft and the outer part is fixed.
                      • Outrunners are the other way around, the inner iron core with the windings is fixed and the magnets are glued in a steel 'flux ring' that spins around the core, so the outer part of the motor that you can see spins.

Personally experience shows setting the timing to 18deg tends to be better than auto timing (both YEP and YGE ESCs), motors run noticeably cooler.

That's an interesting observation. I use auto on mine and while I've had no problems, and the motors run fine, they do get quite hot, so I'll give '18' a try.

Its worth a shot, I used to have it set to Auto on my Forza and Trex but found they both ran cooler on 18 degrees according to the old finger temperature gun.
