  • YEPS escs and Scorpion motors

I just read this on Facebook:

    Announcement:
After having receive many problems report and our own test show YEP speed controller are not compatible with Scorpion motors, please do not use YEP ESC with our motors,
using this brand of ESC with our motor will results in burned motor due to incompatibility!
if you insist on using this ESC with our motor we regretfully have to cancel our warranty on the motor in use with this ESC.
So what's your take on this? Does anyone run a YEP ESC with a Scorpion motor?
Also, the YEPs are now re-branded "Rotorstar", so does that mean if you run a Rotorstar ESC, they won't cancel your warranty?

I've had quite a few YEPs, though only one at the minute, and used them successfully with Align, Compass, Quantum and Turnigy motors. I've never owned a Scorpion motor.

I don't get it. A motor is a motor, surely. Materials differ as does manufacturing quality and balancing etc, but electrically, aren't they all the same? They use a YY wind or a D wind same as every other motor.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

I ran a 100amp YEP with a scorpion motor on a logo 480 and never had any problems whatsoever,

YEP are 100% direct clones of YGE speed controllers so if this was true it would almost certainly apply to YGE too. I'm running a Skorpion HKIII 4035 530kV off a YGE 90HV with no issues.

As you say, motors are motors, there is nothing unique or special about Scorpion. FWIW I'm using a YEP 80HV on a Kontronic Pyro 700 with no issues.

Not quite a direct copy, as apparently the YEP uses 2009 YGE firmware which I believe is the root issue with its operation on some Scorpion motors. I use a YEP 120HV on an old scorpion HK4025 with no problems, however the YEP apparently struggles with some of the 10 pole Scorpion motors.

I'm aware of the problem with YEP escs and high KV 10 pole Scorpion motors such as the 2520 1360KV and 1880KV.

That's been known of since the Warp 360 version came out at least 2 years ago. If that's what Scorpion are meaning, then it took them long enough.

And if that's the only issue (that effects only a very few motors) then why dont they say what the specific issue is and what motors are effected rather than a blanket 'warrantee doesnt apply' statement across all motors in their range? This same high kV / high pole count commutation frequency issue also effects many other ESC's.

Personally I small a anti-Hobbyking agenda at the root of it.

Kontronik still haven't figured that one out with the Koby's funny how Scorpion haven't included them if that's the case.
