  • Changing connectors help

    Hi everyone,

I just got a scorpion Nick Maxwell edition motor which has 6mm bullets on it and my castle 120 has 5mm. So i have never put connector onto a motor or esc before so i am looking for some advice as to what way i should change the connectors.

Change the esc to 6mm? or motor to 5mm?

Also if anyone could recommend me some good connectors that would be great.

I would be tempted to make up some short link cables with 6mm female and 5mm male on each end. Then put heat shrink on them. Saves changing the spec of the connectors on either the motor or esc.

I don't like adapter cables, every solder joint and connector is a source of voltage drop and a potential failure point, i try to minimise the number I have.

All things being equal 6mm bullets would be the (slightly) prefered option as they are likely to have higher current rating and lower voltage drop than the 5mm ones, but having said that 5mm should be perfectly fine too, so just go with what you have available.

PS... if removing the bullets from the motor DO NOT cut them off. The motor winding wire has a tough lacquer coating, so if you cut off the pre-tinned wire ends it's the devil's own job to strip the coating off the wire. Just de-solder the existing connectors and re-solder the tinned ends in the new connectors.

        ^^^ This

Every extra joint is another potential failure point... The least number of joints the better.
Personally, I'd go for the 6mm option.

          Thanks guys!

I am going to change the esc connectors to 6mm. What do you think of these connectors Scorpion 6mm XL Connectors set :: Accessories :: Scorpion Motor and ESC...

If there is anything better suited please link them. Finding it a bit hard to see connectors, i really only need the 6mm bullet female end.

Change the ESC cables if you only want to change one. That way you won't have to worry about the enamel on the motor windings.

              Whoa, that's an expensive motor.
If you have never done it before, it may be a good idea to get "professional" help, that is, pay someone to do it.
Soldering is more difficult than it may seem.

I fell pretty confident in my soldering, i have done a lot of ec5 battery's and a good few other connectors and have never once had a problem. So i am sure i should get on fine

I'm using hobbyking 6mm bullets on my motors.

The Nick Maxwell motor should come with RCProplus bullets on it, according to the photos.

Would i need to match up the connectors or would any 6mm bullet work fine?

                          Oh OK, don't worry then.

I wouldn't mix different brands, and use premium parts (not Hobbyking) for a gold plating higher than one atom monolayer ...
There are some El-Cheapo connectors out there with a notably higher resistance than the regular parts, probably saving micro-pennies by reducing copper content in the bulk metal...

You'll need to match them up more than likely.

When I got my 7HV, it had 6mm Castle bullets on it. I bought some hobbyking ones expecting them to mate up, but they wouldn't, so I had to swap both sides.

The motor winding wire has a tough lacquer coating, so if you cut off the pre-tinned wire ends it's the devil's own job to strip the coating off the wire. Just de-solder the existing connectors and re-solder the tinned ends in the new connectors.
                              Hi,

So i am getting ready to solder on the new connectors to the esc ice 120hv, and i have just cut off one of the bullets and noticed the wire is pre soldered i think. Is this right can i now just solder it onto the new bullet?

I have not changed any of the motor wires as you said they are layered in a coating. I am just hoping this esc is not the same
