  • Gryphon Quasar is rubbish ...

I just wired up a Gryphon Quasar GSR 7075 LMT to my 550 and went to the internet to get a setup manual.
Well the one I downloaded showed the switch positions upside-down to get 6 Volts output. Every position is shown reversed....The manual I downloaded is just plain wrong.
Then I try a basic DC load test - I put a 1.5 Ohm resistor on its 6.0 Volt output to draw a steady 4.0 Amps.
It's output drops from 6.0 V to 4.90 V .. that is crap regulation by anybody's standards. Rubbish.
So I try a short circuit test...... and it blows up, smells bad and now outputs 4.8V on no load....so it's going in the bin..
Can anyone confirm that this device is any use at all?
I am reluctant to buy another until someone tells me the bloody thing works properly.

The LMT version is the replacement, not the earlier batch that were found to be potentially faulty, they did not have the LMT designation.

Aha ! I just peeled the Velcro off the back and it says 7075 on the label, not LMT, so it may be an old type.
I bought it used a while back - that'll teach me...
        Cheers chaps.

That might also explain why the manual seemed wrong?

I got one with a s/h goblin 630 I thought it was faulty until I realised it was the solder at the ec5 which was shocking , fixed that & it's been faultless
if there has been a recall it might be woth trying to get a replacement from the importer

That would have been all well and good if he had'nt shorted it out and blown it up!!

I have three LMT versions two on my 700s and one on my 570 I haven't had any issues with them.

                I would recommend them.

I've just got one of these Quasar BECs with a Goblin 630 Comp that I picked up a couple of weeks ago. The BEC appears to be brand new so hopefully it is the LMT version, but I'll certainly be checking thanks to the heads up given in this thread.

At the time the replacements were sent out to everyone who had bought one with the request to cease using the original and destroy it. Some people may have seen that as an opportunity to keep the replacement and sell the original knowing it was faulty...

                      Cheers chaps.
So ... a CC BEC PRO for 37 quid, a Gryphon Quasar for 76 quid, or what else?
It's only a 550, but it will be in an Airwolf shell, so I'd like to minimise the chances of a plummet caused by a bad soldered joint etc.
I tried a search on here for BEC PRO and didnt find much either way..
                      All wisdom gratefully received.
                      Taaaa.

What about a 2s LiFe battery running unregulated, or a 2s LiPo if using HV servos... Cost less than £15 either way.

On the other hand i've got a BEC pro and the Quasar (checked and it's the LMT) and both have been fine so far. I've got hundreds of flights on the BEC pro but only eight on the Quasar. The BEC Pro performs best if run off just one of your two series 6s packs (assuming you are running 12s), it's output is reduced if run off the full 50v 12s input.

Any BEC of your choosing and an optiguard

personally I would go for a Castle Bec Pro (V3) and an optiguard over a quasar on its own.... they are the same money.

That being said im about in install a quasar (along with an optiguard too).

I have got the BEC pro on my x4 and Logo 500, no problems at all. Had the Gryphon on my E5 and Agile, with the same faultless performance!! I was running the jive 100 LV on my first logo(no BEC), but it kept falling out of the sky. Vbar low voltage error, so now I fit a BEC regardless of how good the internal is supposed to be. Either will do you fine, just cost and personal preference to overcome now .
