  • Kontronic BEC and HV servos?

    Hi all,
A quick question, I'm looking to use a Kontronic 120 ESC with Align HV servos. I have the use of a Progdisc and would be looking to set the BEC to 6V. I've run the servos on a 6.6v LiFe without issue. I'll be using the 2 BEC leads.
Has anyone run this setup and does it work ok? At 6v the servos will draw a lot less current than at HV voltages but I'm still a little concerned about them outdoing the BEC.
I'm considering using an Optiguard but just wanted to know how others had fared without?

    Cheers

Pretty sure you can run the BBC higher higher than 6v you just need the prog disc as you say. I've the powerjive though, not helijive.

I have run this set up and have had Bec cutouts. The servos have been none to back spike, which is something the jive bec won't tolerate. I now run a opt guard with the same setup and have had 100s of problem free flights.
The Bec cut off would only spike near the very end of a flight and it only did it very very occasionally , but to save yourself some grief, fit a backup batt or guard.

        Alright Mr 'arry!
I'm pretty sure 6v is the highest the older ESC will go to. I'll hoy it on the disc and see though.

Thanks for that Anjki, very useful to know. I think I'll use and Opti Guard.
Out of interest, what happened to the heli when the servos overcame the BEC?

          Cheers

It happened twice to me,before I worked out what was happening and fitted an opti guard. .
Both times i lost connection and sufferd a loss of spectrum signal. Both times the model came down and hit ground without power before the spectrum connection had time to reboot.

                Oh Dear!

I think the Opti might have to be the way!

                  Hey Guys.

The only safe way is to fit a BEC capable of powering the system, an Opti Guard will keep you in control of the model, but does not fix the problem, only mask it.

After extensive testing and conversations with others, your choice of FBL system as well as servos, dictates the current demands your model will place on the power system.
I was at the field when Andy lost one of his machines and couldn't really see why at the time as everything worked when it came back to the pits. From my own dealings with the high current draw Gpro/3GX's, a brownout was my only idea of probable cause. Unfortunately the Vortex he was flying at the time could not give any definitive clues, so the diagnosis was based on assumptions until proven right or wrong.

I do know the Vbar is much more power efficient than some other makes of FBL system, then there are some that are at the opposite end and pull probably too much current than required.

Personally the 5 amp continuous BEC of the Kontronic 120 is not enough with modern FBL systems, back with flybarred maybe ok, but now with the loads imposed on the servos and their constant updates from the FBL controller, all put higher power draws well above this.

Grab a better BEC, fit the Opti as a backup and be confident you won't have problems.
                  .
