golf travel case or similar

I am looking into possibly getting a hard-shell case to take a heli abroad and just curious what you guys have used and if there's something cheaper than I'm seeing.

At the moment what comes up most in searches is the Longridge golf club travel case and the SKB cases. The Longridge is just over £70.00 at the lowest price I have seen. The SKBs are much more expensive.

The Longridge weighs 7kg! Kinda heavy, so ideally if there's something a bit lighter that would be good.

Size-wise I'm looking for something that will hold the TDR (tail removed) so the Longridge looks OK (something like 126 X 35 X 32cm).

Sooooo, any other ideas are welcome.

Why now get the cheap little hard suitcase on wheels, and buy a peace of foam and do it you self, seen these in shops around £20 eBay for the hard foam,

If you see one that is 130cm long let me know. The only thing I have seen in that size are the golf club travel cases.
The TDR boom alone is like 90cm so even with the tail off it's still a long item to carry.

Another box I forgot about, is if you look on a disco gear site, they do the ally boxes, they call them light coffin, nice and light and on wheels,

Why not put the boom in your suitcase, raped in a towel, that way you could get a smaller box, just for the frame and canopy, maybe get something square get your tx in there too,

What you need is a second hand Bagpipe case!,,i have no links but the bay should have some,,and also contact bagpipe makers to price a new case.

Just a suggestion, but I've had great success transporting tail booms and blades in the Fedex triangular 'tubes'.

I usually just check the tube in as hold baggage and have done this many times on transatlantic flights and have yet to have any issues.

I'm only checking one bag, so it's not like I'll have a big suitcase and a heli bag, the heli bag IS my suitcase . Then my carry-on has my laptop and LiPos and stuff.

All the dj coffin cases I saw were very heavy ATA style flight cases.

For carrying blades I use a poster holder,your local cinema will have some and they will give them free to get rid.Its two plastic tubes which slide together and wtists to lock,and it costs nothing.

If your going to use padded bag, look in macro, they do polystyrene boxes, grey tough to, was looking at them other day, customers buy them when they buy fresh lobster,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have seen some interesting things in doing these various searches. One idea I will examine just a little more is the concept of two smaller rigid plastic cases inside one big bag. For example, one case that holds the main frame and canopy and a plastic poster tube that holds the boom. I already have a keyboard gig bag so that approach might just work. But I do a lot of travelling then it will be worth it to invest in a nice SKB case, I'd just rather not spend the money right now!

Sorry to drift a bit off topic there…

You could also consider some of the hard cases for drum stands, a traps case. Obviously not the cases for the drums themselves. But the cases used to hold stands, foot pedals and other bits could be an option for you. It is probably the sort of thing Kev was referring to also i would think as they can be used for lighting rigs etc.

This is the sort of thing i mean. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We used to have some of ours custom made so you can fit specific sizes. Some are heavier than others. This one is over 8 kg so may be too heavy. But they are pretty heavy duty. There will be lighter alternatives too. Some have wheels and a handle too so you just pull it along behind you.

You can get a second hand hard case for golf clubs off ebay they are about 70 quid, but they are the best anything with any flex in it and the heli will get damaged, they managed to damage mine and jam the tail studs through the canopy ! my case has a bit of flex, hard case is money well spent if you going to R C Hotel etc you can get a 700 and 600 in one bag with the tails off, you can take radio and lipos but you must tape up the connect plugs, lipos must go on board in hand luggage as the cold extreme in the hold can cause problems with lipo.
