  • I want to buy some land...

...mailnly for my own flying but maybe with a future view to starting up a club. I dont have any idea where to source an agricultural field or whether there would be flying restrictions. Also, I would want to build a barn for indoor flying and cover from the elments.

Anyone got any experience in this department?

Im looking in the north Hants area.

Agreed, I know of a 3.5 acre field in the south of Hampshire going for a price of £140,000.

How about an advert in the Farmers Weekly asking for access to a field rather than trying to buy one. Just a thought.

Hmmm, I reckon agricultural land can be had cheaper than that surely? If this fails gonna buy a house with a paddock for flying. Imagine, a flying field with cover, electricity, hot drinks, thai girls...ok, forget the last one

first thing id do is contact the BMFA for there guide on flying sites and use that as a basis on sites your looking for also has tips for planning permission. also remember you only need permission for the field you use to take off not over fly however its always a good idea to have the permission of the farmer. but that fact should allow you to reduce the size of feild required.

The price of the land varies with how productive it is agriculturally, and what restrictions might be placed on it. For example some scabby grassland in the peak distruict is very cheap - but you probably won't get planning permission for a flying club, certainly not unless it was all electric.

If you have the money to consider this, how come you are not in a country with better weather?

I recommend south america. Brazil is really nice.

defo, as when you go to collect your ditched heli the last thing you want is some farmer chasing you off with a 12 bore.

Im in the fortunate position of being somewhat richer today than yesterday having sold a house I rented out. Great idea about the BMFA, I'll contact them and get some info.

The dream (and currently thats all it it is is as follows:-

House with paddock (seperate land would work tho) running as a B&B Friday and Sat night, heli flying area offering instruction possibly with large barn for indoor flying. I guess the budget is about max 700k

                      There are a few issues:-

I'm learning myself so long way off instructor doh!
Cant find the property we want
Wife hates the idea of B&B

If I don't do it soon Im gonna die at my desk doing IT wishing I was doing something else!

Maybe I have it all wrong but thinking along the lines of a club that offers additional facilities such as instruction, secure storage, under cover areas, refreshments, residential courses, electricity for chargers, building/repair service etc.

How this is all paid for has not even been considered since we are all a tight fisted bunch

What Im encouraged about here is that you guys have not said 'waste of time/money'. I dont need to be rich, just earn enough to keep me going and buy a few Align parts

As for abroad, France is a defo possibility...

                        Best of luck!

....with your new venture - great idea and beats the hell out of sitting at a desk
One thing I would add is you MUST get the locals on your side before even thinking of applying for pp, otherwise you'll not have a cat's chance - unfortunately NIMBY is alive and well!
...and i would DEFINITELY get the BMFA on your case, I'm sure you'll find invaluable help there.
France sounds good - we'd certainly come for a holiday

I really like the way your thinking Colin and hell what a way to spend your cash.

Pity you are down on the south coast and I'm up here in Deepest Yorkshire with shed loads of land.

We could have made a hell of a heli club..

I wish you all the best in your venture and truly hope your dreams come true..
