  • Maintenance - to much is never enough

I pride myself on my maintenance schedule I think I do the right things check the right parts etc. Infact I went over all my helis after last weekend with a fine tooth comb checking every nut bolt and screw.....Except.

    I ovbiously missed one.

Yesterday best day of the year (now got panda eyes incidently) first flight with the knight 3D. just doing some warm up stuff pulling out of and verted hover when all of a sudden at about 100feet up I lose control totally the thing starts to roll and flip im pulling the stick one way then the other, thinking this is one hell of a glitch(strange in itelf on spektrum). She was falling fast so I knew the inevetable and flicked on the throttle hold, and continued to battle it all the way to the deck.

got it back to the bench took off the canopy what did I find. Well there may have been a chance I wasn't as thourough as I thought I was. The aileron servo horn was not on the servo, after some checking I confirmed nothing had broken so obviously the screw came out and the horn popped off. So a word of warning these are 9255 servos metal gears your not supposed to use threadlock on them so check them carfully.

The damage, I got away REALLY lightly. on first inspection it looks like undercarrage, feathering spindle, mainshaft and a couple of creases in the canopy, which is still usable. not had a chance to check it over completely but the blades are fine as it the flybar.

So guys maintenance maintenance maintenance....good flying
    All the best
    Tony.

I've always used a tiny bit of loctite on all metal geared servos. I've never read anywhere that I shouldn't

Yeah absolutely always a tiny drop on metal output gear servos. Screw the instructions, it's your heli, not theirs!

I have had this happen to me ages ago. I now use red thread lock but have replace a lot of my servo screws with bolts so I can use an allen key too make sure they will unscrew when I need them to.

I think this is a wake up call for us all!

At least the damage was minimal, from that height it could have been a right off.

Sorry to hear. Same thing happened to me on Saturday. Also with a Knight 3D, also the aileron horn and also never used loctite on my 9255 servos. Minimal damage and will loctitie from now on. These 3Ds are tough though.

Sorry to hear about the mishap. Do you have the star washers fitted? The star washer is there under the arm to bite into the plastic of the horn and to impart some anti vibration torsion. The ones supplied are of low quality and I do change them periodically as they tend to flatten out. Not really into the loctite route. Just my 2 penneth. cheers Dave
