Trex 450 Sloppy head help (video link)

Hi guys, hope you can see what I'm saying, Ive had the head apart twice already, first time couldnt see any problems with bearing in the blade grips, second time replaced them anyway as the problem continued and now I'm completely lost.

The only parts that aren't brand new is the centre of the head (not sure what its called) and the bearing inside but I thought if this was the problem when you pulled one blade up surely the other blade would move down.

Incase you havent guess, I'm lost lol

Replace the whole lot? dont want to just keep throwing money at it blindley

Hi Martyn,

it looks like you could do with a few shims,
place them between your blade grip and center Hub and re-tight. (start with something like .3 on both sides)

also check if your centre Hub is the latest version with two screws against the main shaft, I've had similar problem when first converted a Sport to DFC and the main Hub didn't last long and developed to much play, the latest centre hub ensured that all play is at the blade grips which is easily fixed as described above

it feels like there is more vibration and certainly when it is flying there is a lot of blade noise compared to normal

Mine was like that it wasnt untill i built my goblin and watched bert kammerer maintence and setup tips video that i realised the dfc head needed to be that tight. Ive added extra shims and mines ok now.

Go to align trex.co.uk and type in the search bar hs1291 and you'll get some new dampers too,shim sizes are in the description should you need to buy some different thicknesses on evilbay...

Also Just make sure your head block is nice and tight to the main shaft plus make sure your blades have the right size root for the grips, are they align blades your using??

just to check, i ordered the dampers, the washer that comes with it, is that what you mean by a shim or is there a separate item you use to shim it?

I got the dampers anyway as they could be the issue on their own.

Yes the washers are shims.
your dampers may have worn too, make sure you lubricate the dampers with some silicone grease or something like Vaseline before you install them so they don't go hard and crack as this will lead to needing to re shim once again.
when you get the parts let us know how it all fits together and if it gets better or worse, you may need more or less shims.

Having owned four Trex450's two fb & two fbl I'll just say they're all like that. Once the heads spinning at 3000rpm+ small amounts of slop don't figure.
My 500 & 550 display almost zero slop, maybe its just size specific?

Same as Adrian, had a couple of 450s with sloppy heads. Tried new heads, blade grips, dampers , feathering shafts, replaced bearings with different makes and shimming till they were a tight fit,still that slop was there. By sliding new bearings onto a new feathering shaft and gently rocking them it is possible to see that looseness is in the ball race assembly. Nought you can do about that I guess. Bloody annoying tho, as I also have a 550e and there ain't no sloppiness there so I'm guessing it's type specific unless someone else has the answer.
