  • Melting EC5 connector

Well that's a new one on me. Popped out for a couple of flights with my TRex 550 DFC. All okay until I finished flying and then could not disconnect the battery from the speed controller. After much pulling I managed to get it disconnected but it is clear to see that the blue plastic on the battery end had melted. I can only assume that it must have been arcing a bit but I've never heard of that before. Going to change all my connectors before I fly again

Wow not heard of it myself they are rated very high so being used on a 550 should not have caused that, check your solder joint just in case it's causing a bit of resistance at that point, resistance = heat,

Solder joints seem to be fine. I always felt that they were a bit slack and easy to push on but I checked this with the supplier and they said this was normal. I had changed from Deans so had no experience of how tight they should be. Anyway, glad it didn't cause the 3gx to brown out and I will change all connectors before the next flight.

The battery side connector of EC5s is just a hollow cylinder. The heli side has the springed fingers that are responsible for contact pressure, IIRC.
I would have thought it's more likely you need to replace the connector on the heli TBH.

Just poor contact, just replace it but check both sides. If burn marks on the other side I'd replace that to.

Just bought some rcproplus supra x pro d connectors 6mm and 4mm for my helis they lock into each other. they feel really good and solid and really easy to solder up. Bought from rc711. Videos on YouTube.

My ec5 were loose sometimes. They cost a little more but how much would a short and fire cost if they went wrong...

And they are reusable not like the ec5 connectors

If you use EC5's try and get them all from the same place, I know they're supposed to be compatable but there are fractional differences between manufacturers. Could easily cause the problem you describe. I only use HK ones since they are a quid or so a pair. Been flawless so far.

I've used the same HK ones on my 550, been great.

They look excellent! Much less guesswork in the soldering than EC5's, as long as the clips dont easily come off they're a great design.
If I didn't have 30 odd EC5 shod batts etc I'd have to give them a shot!
