  • Turnigy Nano-Tech soldering issues

    Hi Guys,

Just after a bit of advice. I want to get a couple of the Turnigy Nano-Tech batteries from HK but I keep seeing that they are a nightmare to solder to the connectors due to being made of Aluminium.
Is this true or a bit of speculation and if true is there a specific solder I need to be using?
As a general note what is the best type of solder to use for the old lipo connectors? I have just used a bog standard one but would rather invest in a better quality as the cost of my toys goes up.

    Cheers

    Ross

If you are changing connectors for ec5's then I would just use a gas torch and heat the bottom of connector up and lightly pull on wire to free it. I've soldered many turnigy lipos and find them ok. You do need some good solder with flux in it if poss, maplin do some for £6.99 a tube and I used it at the weekend and was fine. I use a gas soldering iron too as it seems to get hotter than my electric one, but if got a decent iron, should have no problems. If your lipos are brand new, just cut the outer shroud off and secure the connector and heat. I use some wood with hole drilled in it. I think the secret is getting the wires hot enough to take the solder, with out burning them, if you get what I mean.

      Turnigy Nano-Tech soldering issues

Soldering can be tricky especially if you're new to it.
I remember my first ever lipo packs I didn't want to risk soldering them myself as they were 6 cell and cost me a bit of money. So I sent them to Revolextrix where I bought my Cellpro charger from and the bloke there soldered the connectors on for me. Top bloke and some of the best customer service that I've ever recieved. I just paid for the postage there and a couple of quid for him to solder the connectors on for me and he even paid for the postage back to me! [emoji106][emoji16]
After that I decided that my next packs, I would solder the connectors on myself as I wasn't going to learn how to do it by getting someone else to do it for me.
I use a 60/40 lead/tin based solder which is hard to get these days as a lot don't solder with lead based as it can be dangerous from the fumes. It does make a soldered connection a lot better and easier to do and I've never had to use flux either. Also a good soldering iron is a must! Check the thread on here which talks about the types of soldering irons.
I'm sure someone on here would provide a soldering service if you're really unsure mate.

      Best of luck.
      Cheers,

        Cheers guys,
I am using a soldering Iron at the moment with some basic solder that came with it. all I know is it gets hot and works on my optipower batteries
I'll have to look at investing in some better stuff.

I use a gas soldering iron... i take the end off and use it as a mini torch. Hold the bullets in a vice and heat them up with the torch... fill half way with solder and push your pre-tinned battery wire into the bullet. Do one at a time fitting into the EC5 case in order to isolate so that the wires dont short

I've done nano tech packs. There's no issue with them at all, the cable is just stock silicon cable.

For solder I use this stuff

60/40 tin lead makes a huge difference to your soldering.

And if it is Ali give it a good clean and tin lead will stick to it.

I got some 6s nanos last week and they came with bullets pre soldered so changing to ec5s was easy as they're already tinned

Soldering is easier if you hold the metal connectors in something that doesn't conduct heat. One person drilled holes in a wooden block, I tend to use a piece of cardboard wrapped around the metal. Use a big solder bit as well.

I use a 100w soldering iron for doing EC5 connectors, I too use holes drilled in a bit of wood. The first time I tried to solder an EC5 I only had a 25w iron and needless to say that didn't work very well!

I too use a block of wood with holes drilled in it.

My 70 watt Weller soldering iron does EC5 connectors and 4mm bullet type very easily. I have been soldering for 47 years, I suppose that helps.

The Solder tabs on Lipo cells may be Aluminium but the assembled pack will be regular silicone wire.
The more recent thing is the lead free solder (if the ends are pre tinned), that has a characteristic of a slightly higher melting point than lead solder.
If you have proper Temp controller iron it shouldn't be a problem & is more of an issue with Esc's.
