Agree with Rob and Trillian - I think that the "new and shiny" effect is very relevant. I am always amazed when I see posts from people saying "I am replacing all of my XXX's with YYY's" when they had previously posted how happy they were with their XXX's - the Yanks are even worse for this than us

regarding "new and shiny".. maybe buying a new iteration of T-Rex is just "new and shiny", not much innovative progress there; but, while you can't argue that Avant Aurora is a good model, you'd be fool saying it's not worth to switch to Mostro; same for Compass 6hv into 6hvU. There are a lot of reasons why the model you were totally happy with suddenly is only sub-par to today's standards.

Logo's have flybars too you know. I have 2 flybarred heads for mine so i can switch back as & when I want. I would never sell a flybarred head after converting. And flybarred logo's fly very well but i can't say how much better than others as it's all i've flown.

          Oh & i'd like a Trex 700E V2 because i think it's the nicest looking, sod shiney & new.

I used to buy new because the problems with helis as a newb are vast and often - just recently on here I saw an example - people replace all the parts bar the one that is causing the issue spending £££ that could have been on a new heli to fix someones 2nd hand - hand me down. Now, however I've learned a bit and happily buy second hand, I can quite quickly work out whats wrong so it does not cost an arm and a leg to fix and fly.

I must say I have never bought a proper heli (i.e not a micro!) new! And touch wood they have all been perfect. My 550, my 700e, my 450 and the Gaui 450 (that ironically I have just put up for sale!) all flew brilliantly and have given me no issues.

Me personally, I am willing to pay a little more if I know where it came from and know it was built well. I payed a little over the odds for a 2nd hand 550 when I bought mine, but it came from a well respected member on here and had plainly been built and maintained to a high standard! I payed less for my 700e than I did for my 550! But even then my 700e has turned out be a good, solid model and has only just started to need new ball links after almost 100 flights.

I think if you know what you are looking at, and can confidently say to yourself " I know what I am getting " then there is no problem with 2nd hand helicopters, I for one do not have the budget for brand new helis so 2nd hand is the only way for me to even be in this hobby!

I used to buy new and still do to an extent as I enjoy the build. But I wouldn't buy electrics new anymore as you can get it so much cheaper second hand. I agree with Don that the prices are driven artificially low on here by some who sell super cheap. But then we have all taken advantage of those cheap prices as well.

I can't speak for others but if I was considering buying a 2nd had model I would be weighing up the risk of it having all sort of problems and needing more money spending on it. Of course if i buy from a friend then i know the history of it and can check it over. i prefer this approach. If I do see a 2nd hand model advertised by someone I don't know then it will have to be reasonably cheaper than a brand new kit. Why would i buy a 2nd hand kit unless the money saved outweighs the risks? That's just my thinking.

Also I think a lot of other people who buy 2nd hand, especially those on BMFA, are just looking for a bargain. Some seem to have the attitude that your're hard up for cash and desperate to sell. They make stupid offers way below the asking price. Sometime i will make an offer slightly lower than the asking price but I never try to take advantage or take the P.

Because this is what they are really worth.

most of my helis are used machines when purchased
i've only ever had 2 bad ones
the one i knew and had flown which when purchased it was found to be unsafe to fly
the second one was not checked before it was flown and i payed the price, it was built by a total richard who thought he was a master builder

Why doesn't our model hold value?

Second hand is the way to go for me as well, but i only buy if it's a great deal. For example: i bought a few months ago a 450 se clone, with align esc, align motor, ds410 on cyclic, and align 3g unit and paid for it 110€. Only thing i've changed was the canopy and it still flies good.
Now, i'm waiting on delivery man to bring me a crashed 450 pro tarot with 450mx motor, 70amp align esc, 3x ds415m servos, 1x ds425m and zd720 gyro. The kit is flybarred at the moment, with align torque tube and tail case. For all of that, i paid 90€. Sure, it will take some cash to put it back in the air but i think it's still going to be cheaper than buying working sh heli.

New bargains can be had too. I picked up a gaui x3 off eBay for £80 new.
