  • Charger powersource whilst at the field?

Recently got a new heli and the leisure battery I am using doesn't take very long to become flat, I was wondering what other people are using to charge their batteries whilst at the field.

I currently have a 110mp leisure battery and I am chargering lipos 6s 5000 mah batteries.

Currently using a 125a/h leisure battery - i get roughly 6-7 charges of my 6s 4000 packs. I find it a bit of an arse tbh as i'm always forgetting to charge the battery, so hopefully the next purchase will be a gennie

Mind you one of my clubs has banned gennies

Done that a few times myself, plus I get fed up with carrying it around!!!

Make sure your charger is set to work as low as possible. Most will work down to 10V. Reducing the current will get you more charges. Make sure you charge it up as soon as possible afterwards. More 12V batteries will help a lot. Charge to 14.4V at about 200 to 300ma. ie Until the charge current drops that far while the battery is at 14.4 volts.

After a year or so the battery will need to be discharged to 10V at 200 to 300 ma. You'll find the output volts will go up as the old high resistance chemicals get removed.

          Hey.

What charger are you using and could you add a second leisure battery to increase DC output to 24 volts and get more LiPo pack charges per leisure battery charge?

In the long run though a generator is the best solution over lugging around two big leisure batteries.

I'm using the PL6, I was trying to avoid the generator route tbh, I think a second battery is probably the solution, it should give me around 10 - 12 charges at the field that way.

How do you link the two?

              Hey Buddy.

A few of the guys at the club use two batteries making 24 volts and have great result, so it's a good alternative.

With linking the two, I'd look at the car stereo fraternity for some nice terminal blocks and some decent gauge wire. Even Halfords may have an earth lead you could use to link the two.
