  • OS 50 Hyper Max maintenance articles

    Hi guys,
I've just published some maintenance articles for the OS 50 Hyper Max engine which currently include deconstructing and reconstructing the carburettor and also the piston assembly, piston ring etc.

For full details, please visit http://www.50-tuning.com/articles/OS...rMax/index.asp

I will add the currently missing article on replacing engine bearings in the future.

    I hope they help
    Cheers,
    Rob

        Thanks guys
It's mainly for those that are new to engines to show that it really is pretty easy
        Cheers,

Thanks Phil, and um, sorry... I guess it's not going to be done in time for you doing yours - unless you happen to be waiting a few weeks (or so...) - I haven't done any in quite a while so I don't have any photos for the next article.

It's dead easy to do though (as is most stuff in the engine )
Bearings in the freezer while you stuff the stripped out engine in the oven to let the bearings fall out (approx 15 minutes gas mark 5 ) - fit the new front bearing into the top of the (now hot) engine body, then fit back bearing onto the crank and drop the crank through the (still hot) engine body and front bearing making sure the bearing sits all the way in. You can check that by looking through the head of the engine to see where the journal is positioned - it should be lined up within the groove around the engine body (cut away to allow room for the con-rod).
There should be no end float on the crank shaft either.
Refitting the back bearing and crank should be done fairly quickly to avoid the bearings heating up off the engine enough to stop them locating correctly.

Leave engine to cool and rebuild the internals again.

            Have fun
            Cheers,
            Rob

As Rob says its a lot easier than it looks.

The Hyper 50 has been known to using the odd rear bearing in the past..

A good tip..Is to have a block of wood beside you, that way you can give the crankcase a firm/sharp tap in case its a little hesitant to drop out. Remember its the heat that allows the crankcase to expand to release the bearing so don't do it if it's gone cold on you. OH and do make sure you tap it square on where the 4 backplate screws go.

BTW it gets bloddy hot so use protection

In most cases you can just replace the rear bearing only.. unless you let it get real bad before you strip the motor.
