  • Optipower back up guard kicking in every time I fly

    Hey guys,

I fitted one of them Optipower back up guards with the LED and the light goes off every time I fly the heli!

I realise this must mean my rx pack volts drops by more than 0.5v and is presumably becuase when I take off my servos are suddenly being constantly moved by the beastx so thus drawing more power.

But how do I stop it? I can't surely just keep flying with the BUG constantly activated? It's fitted to my Trex 700e with the stock castle 120hv and 700mx motor, servos are Ds610 on cyclic and DS620 on the tail with a turnigy nano tech 2s 2000mah LiFe rx pack.

    Peace.

Ok, but you could go on forever, what if the back up guard fails?, I would only use a backup guard if your main battery is supplying power through the ESC or a BEC.

          Hello Gary
I run a optipower on my 700e also with a 2500 life pack. I find if I charge the life pack when I have finished and it is standing for a couple of days the optipower does not turn on
and lights do not flash. There is already a long thread on here on the optipower with some people having the same problems. I believe Optipower will shortly have a firmware
upgrade to sort out this happening, but your unit will have to be sent back for them to upgrade it......

            Hi

the UG was originally not designed to work with RX-Packs. However, we got some feedback and demand to support this, so we developed a completely new firmware to support BEC and RX-packs seamlesly.

Specifically the back EMF handling is very different with RX packs, so it is not just a matter of setting a lower setpoint. All this can“t be captured with a multimeter, not even with the most expensive one, you need scopes and do all the tests having servo load applied.

Contact Opti if you fly on a RX pack and need the new firmware. ( note, this is from another forum I copied )

Yeah I know what you mean, I only bought is as I am still fairly unsure about how many flights my rx packs will take (as well as being forgetful and sticking one in that needs a charge!) and the Castle esc I use has a bit of a reputation for spontaneous combustion!

So all in 40 quid for dual redundancy to safeguard against a several hundred pound crash is fine by my man-maths.
