  • repairing canopy hole

Morning all, I have misjudged drilling a hole in a canopy for the grommit, what if any is the best way to repair it, would have to be strong, its an 8mm hole, I need to move the hole forward by 8mm so will just be touching the outsite of the wrong hole with the pressure pushing back towards the wrong hole
    Thanks

It's not going to look neat but you can use either tissue or glass fibre Matt and some resin, put that on the back and add a little tissue into the hole. A little touch up paint and you'll know its there but it'll stand up to a new hole

Thanks, what kind of resin? Could I attempt to "bodge"it with the 2part stuff? Possibly a layer under first and try to be neat on top after, not too bothered about the way it looks as long as it does the job
£42 for new cano or 30mins and two part I have here, may as well try the free route first

I use glass fibre reapir kit from a motor factors, not sure whether epoxy would do it, probably crack where the glass fibre resin remains flexible and doesn't crack

        Something like this, and

        Then grab some of this

Yeah I've used the Halfords "kit" a few times to repair scale fuselages too - works well

I used the halfords..but when I ran out of resin I've also used glass tissue with 2-part epoxy and works as well. To fill the hole left from applying the tisue inside I used just to float epoxy in there but stumbled across an idea yesterday of mixing epoxy with some filler powder - talc would probably work well.

You could try putting something non sticky (like grease proof paper perhaps) on the outside of the hole before doing the inside. Might help to keep the repair more uniform on the outside. Or perhaps cover the hole with masking tape, cut out the hole in the tape so you can fill the hole to the surface and hopefully just pull the tape off leaving the surrounding area unaffected?
.......unless otherwise stated, all opinions are my own.

I found masking tape dips in as soon as it gets soaked, insulating tape doesn't but I found that the resin soaks through and sits proud anyway so it fills itself

Have had a go with suggested materials, ive only done 1 layer under as the glass tissue was fairly thick, I left it dry and then made several attempts to get some round pieces in the hole with no joy so I ended up filling it with some resin, im happy enough with it

When I'm moving holes, (Hmmmmm), I create a fibreglass backing on the inside of the cano, then either fill the hole with resin, or filler or stopper, sand back, and repaint. It's invisible !!

you can use ca with fibre glass tissue, it holds well and is nice and thin
so the repair can be hiffen very easily
