  • Expo on rudder ?

    Hi all
is it a good idea to use expo on rudder. What are the advantages or disadvantages. I use 20% on ele and ail but never used it on rudder.
    cheers Andy

i use more on rudder than on cyclic it helps keeping the heli straight when coming out of loops and rolls ect. personal preference i suppose.

I actually use -ve expo to get the tail speed at the right place on the stick, on V bar that is. It's down to feel also

Expo is purely preference, some have ninja thumbs and fly without but I like a dead area where nothing happens and my tail inputs are deliberate rather than accidental I think I have about 15% 25 % and 35% progged into the rudder dr switch which I can choose between as some days I fly better than others lol

20% on the cyclic and 30% on the rudder works for me.

I don't like much expo on cyclics - I find it just catches me out by responding violently when I don't expect it and move the sticks a bit more than needed.
Expo was (I believe) intended to linearize the cosine error you get with a rotating servo arm - it would be interesting to do some sums & see what setting provides the nearest to a 'proper linear' response, assuming you could figure out what the TX manf considered to be 'exponential'....lazy software guys have prolly made it a square law or something.
I use some on rudder because my pitch thumb is very very silly.

None on the rudder. 13% on cyclics. I like my rudder very fast and instant. I find if my rudder is too washy or not quick enough i tend to sometimes over pitch slightly. I like small stick movements equalling big throws. Especially on Rudder

Vbar and Spartan internally have 50% expo on rudder by default. I reduced mine to 40%.

55% on my logo, I think nowt on cyclic. Each of my heli's is different though & run less. I'm with don as in I like my tail inputs to be deliberate. Like I use full Rudd for piro flips so set the Rudd ep's to suit, beats me how anyone can maintain a consistent piro mid stick? Anyhow duncan osbourn uses 5% on rudd

Curious you say that I very rarely use full stick, Ive got big hands but not long thumbs so I like my speed at around 3/4 stick, thats the reason I use -ve expo on tail so I get more acceleration just off centre

Maybe as i have 'piano fingers 'n' thumbs' this causes more rudd interaction when working the collective, especially on aileron tic tocs but with a ton of expo problem solved. I find the tail feels too loose if i run too little. Ash flew my logo once but couldn't fly it as i had too much expo
