My experience is that they are pretty robust. Depending on the heli configuration (how the battery is mounted) and the type of crash (orientation at impact). I certainly wouldn't describe LiPo's as fragile.
On the 600 e pro the batteries are well protected inside the frames. I think that they are unlikely to be damaged in a crash. On the 450 the pack is mounted at the front but I have not had any battery damage in any of my (20+) crashes.
