  • Turnigy XT-80 camera won't switch on?

    Hi guys,

For Christmas my brother got me one of these mini cameras.. he wants me stick it to a heli and fly round with it lol.

But i cannot get it to switch on? I've had it plugged in a usb charger all day and some lights came on to indicate its charging but just cannot get it to switch on?

Anyone got any clues as to why?

    Cheers
    Matt

Just guessing Matt but do you need to press and hold the switch rather than just press? If its from hobbyking and there are no instruction booklets, you can usually find them on their web site on the page you bought it from under the "files" tab.

        Thanks Ron & Kev...

I have tried all ways I can think of to turn it on... quick press, press & hold, double quick press etc and nothing.

Thanks for the instructions, It has been on charge all day but the blue light is still flashing (indicating its charging).. wondering if theres a fault with the battery... although it did get a little warm while it was charging so power must have been going in?

Just wondering if there was a trick to these cameras, as we all know the chinese cheapos can be a bit funny like that, instructions from another product etc.

Sure you've checked but there's not a piece of tape between battery & contact as you sometimes get on items with battery already installed.

I've just opened it up, theres what looks like a single cell lipo (no writing on it that I can see) thats got its leads soldered to the main board.. soldering all looks ok. When plugged into a usb port the LED's do come on and it does warm up like its charging.

I have written the txt file as per the instructions and still wont switch on =(

Yeah it is to me too... my gut feeling is the lipo cell is duff.. the instructions say if the battery voltage is too low it will not switch on and the fact it hasn't reached full charge despite being plugged in all day suggests duff lipo (or circuit but my gut feeling is duff lipo).

Will let my brother know and see where we go. If he can't swap it i may try fix it myself.

Yeah some sort of small battery would do the trick.. i'm going to open it up again though and put a multimeter on the battery.. see what voltage its at.

Brother says he bought it a month or two ago.. thing is with them being a cheap camera it isnt really worth the postage cost to return it imo.

I also have the exact same problem with a key chain cam, I think I'll try what Boggy has done.
Like you say Matt it's probably not worth the postage so give it a go, see if replacing the battery works!

I used the socket from a charger soldered it to the main board then just hot glued it and the wires to the side next to the usb socket.( i did away with the main body as i was trying to save every gram of weight ( a 175mah mcpx battery is also half the size of the original) i could, but im sure with a craft knife and a bit of carefull carving it would fit back on. The battery out lasts a 2gb card and i have a few for spares just in case, charging is through the usb port as normal. ( i dont leave them more than an hour ,so hopefully no overcharging) or i can charge them in another mcpx style charger .

With these things being made in mass production on the cheap theres gonna be plenty of duffs around... & yeah postage cost just isn't worth it.

I have just opened it up and put a multimeter on the lipo... its reading 0v so I presume the lead must be broke inside the battery or the cell is completely dead... either way I was right in my gut feeling in that when power is applied to the camera via usb it lights up but never reaches fully charged, well we know why now lol.

I'm willing to bet the camera will work but just needs a good lipo to replace the duff one.. so its fixable I guess!

For a quick test you could always simply take the power off any other lipo pack via the balance lead to grab a single cell..stiff wire or a panel pin to act as the male pin into the balance lead - so long as you're sure of polarity in the camera. In fact the current draw would be so low you could power it like that in flight off the heli's main or flight pack without mischief.

hmm! theres an idea.. as you say the current draw is next to nothing.. could do away with the battery and just have a lead to plug into the balancing plug on the main pack.. hmm!
