The idea is that a salty solution is a conductor of electricity so it will create a circuit across the contacts and thus slowly discharge the pack.Originally posted by waveydavey View PostHow does the salt water penetrate the wrap around the pack itself, or do you have to puncture it
It is a very slow process and a much quicker way is to get a number of 12volt car bulbs and connect them in series and parallel depending on what the pack voltage is and how quick you want to do the discharge in.

Actually no, a discharged pack is not a safe pack at all. The liquid electrolyte they contain will hydrolyze on contact with oxygen and form HF (hydrogen fluoride) which is a very very nasty chemical indeed. On contact with the skill it will penetrate the epidermal layer and kill nerve endings, get enough of it on your skin and it will kill you. It's a similar story with the gasses they expel when punctured or when they experience an runaway thermal reaction. Please do not mess about with lipo packs, treat them with respect and dispose of them responsibly!Originally posted by waveydavey View PostSo essentially a depleted pack is a safe pack, now I know. The chemicals lithium etc pause no danger once electrically wound down. Thanks

I'll have to see if we have a dedicated battery recycling bin around here. I suppose it's still a good idea to discharge them anyway, on a charger or something, down to as low as possible. Maybe chop the connectors off and tape up the wires or chop the wires off so far down that they cannot touch and tape them as well.Originally posted by AcidDrink View PostYou can always pack them up and send to random adresses like McDonalds
Jokes aside, I think dedicated battery recycling place, like council ones is a good idea. Salt water doesn't work.Kasama, Minicopter, Henseleit, JR, Shape, Beam

I disposed of 7 x 3 cell lipos and a 6 cell lipo at my local council battery recycling plant after they puffed up really bad. I didn't discharge them or anything as I didn't want to risk myself so I simply just took them as they were and left them for the people that deal with recycling batteries. Afterall the people that recycle batteries know what they're doing and what they're dealing with. It doesn't matter what type of batteries they are, all batteries can be dangerous.

Where is that Grant? I might have to make use of that facility myself.
