Ok heres something ive been wondering for a bit, why have the ability to switch in and out of HH mode or for that matter different rates. so far in my flying I think since having a HH gyro it stays in that mode all the time.

I just thought there has to be a reason people set it up but what is that reason?
    All the best

on a CSM, you have to have both mode's programmed in, as the gyro mode channel has to go from + to - to quick trim, and to go into the gyro's setup etc. I haven't flown rate mode for age's now, gonna try and see how scary it is............
-I don't crash, I just land with enthusiasm.

A couple of 600n's with stuff on them that makes them fly..
A 550 fbl with even more stuff on it to make it fly
And a Mars 470 which needs stuff putting on it to make it fly

    And a DX8 too

It helps to setup the rudder mechanics - out of HH mode the rudder will constantly drift if it's not mechanically set up correctly.
It's also used in scale flying I believe.

Apart from rudder mechanical setup, I never fly out of HH mode myself.
      Cheers,

There is no rate mode at all..

well youve all echoed my thoughts, but I did think I was missing something, obviously not.

well apart from Tim being all flash with his Solid G gyro LOL

If you fly in rate mode when doing circuits once you have initiated the turn the tail will continue to follow without further input. In HH mode you need to hold the rudder input to fly the tail round.

It is also useful to have a quick hover on the first flight of the day in rate mode because it will highlight if something is wrong mechanically with the rudder, assuming you have set the required offset for a hands off hover in rate mode.

I am a relative noobie but isnt flying in rate mode meant to make life a little easier when learning? I have just started using HH mode and it gives you more to think about I feel. or have I got it wrong?

think you have that the wrong way round hh does what it says on the tin, holds heading rate mode tends to drift off

i learned to fly with a normal gyro, havent every used owt but hh after buying a 401

Im old school i first learnt to fly with the old futaba wizzy gyros, you used to switch on and wait about a min just for the gyro to pick up speed and get to the right temperature. But when i got my first HH gyro geeeeeeees my head was not thinking right and my turns looked more like i was trying to do drifting with my heli all over the place and the tail would not swing around without my input.

Im used to them now and would never go back

I'm from the same era and had similar problems, after fitting my first HH gyro my turns were awful but also soon got used to it. My flying has improved so much over the last couple of years and I certainly couldn't have done it without HH gyros.

I do have a scale 50 size Hughes 500E and I still fly this in HH mode plus I still use the same 3D pitch & throttle curves, although it does look odd inverted
