  • Why not put the one-way on the motor?

..since parts counts are going down you could then run the tail off the main gear?

I think the MA Whiplash has a one-way on the motor but I'm not sure what the setup is with the tail.

The tail jack shaft is run straight off the main gear.

Having delved into motor design there are a few potential problems with this method:

size - its going to increase the height of the motor by at least the height of the one way (approx 20mm) and then you will probably need another radial bearing the other side of it (another 5mm) so you are looking at 25mm extra on the motor length.

driven speed - its going to be a lot higher on the motor side, by a factor of about 9, and this may cause problems with the bearing retaining oil/grease due to the higher centripedal acceleration experienced.

direction - this would be fixed, meaning that you would have to take apart the motor to use it in another application if the motor was mounted in the opposite orientation.

'aftermarket' motor suppliers would have to make special motors for particular helis, making it less likely to see a wide range for that heli

They put the one way/sprag clutch inside the pinion not the motor. It works very well on the protos, and the whiplash takes a pounding without any lockups etc.
