  • LiPo Fires & Storage (Metal Ammo Box)

I'm working on a new box to store my LiPos in. Upto yet its taking the form of a:

Metal Ammo box, with some sort of vent cut into it to allow the escape of pressures should a lipo go off. Inside the space will be split up into compartments to slow down or restrict the fire spreading to other lipos using fire resistant materials.

Looking at videos of lipos going up, it seems that if a lipo is open to the air, it goes up more ferociously than one that is in a bag or has external oxygen restricted to it (I am fully aware lipos produce oxygen and hence fuel their own fires... but the point is, if thats the only oxygen fueling the fire the reaction is slower)

To both insulate the lipos from the metal case and to contain the flames (to some degree) I am wondering if a fire blanket modified into compartments would do the job.. perhaps better than wood that some people have used.

As the vent, I'm thinking a few small holes drilled in the top side panel with some very fine mesh applied to it, to act as a kind of filter.. allowing pressure out but retaining some soot.

Two questions in my mind is what temperature do lipos burn at and is there a heat resistant glue I could use instead of sewing/threads?

Will post pics as the build develops

Any opinions in the mean time would be cool =)

i dont have any vent holes, I use this one Ex-NATO Ammo/Grenade Box, Lockable and Waterproof | eBay it has a rubber seal, once partially removed you then use the latch screws to allow the cover to lift in case of a lipo going off but still securing the cover in place ... works perfectly fine - havent had an incident yet but I assume it should work as intended ...

Heres a link to fire proof boarding used in the building & construction industry, it used to contain asbestos & was called aspestolux, this version is now safe to health, it is 6mm thick and fire rated for 30 minutes.

How many 6 cell 5000mah batts do you think can fit in one of those boxes?

Thanks for the info guys... i did look at that granade box, its a bit larger than the other boxes i've seen but its not tall enough to store 6s packs upright.. if i had 12S trays to store then it would be ideal. I don't want the box to be too big or too heavy as i plan on using it to transport to the field and back aswell as storage.

Wildawake.. excellent material/link! I did think about fireboard used in fireplaces but i'm not sure how strong it is.. wether it would just crumble when cut up.
I suppose instead of making a vent i could remove a section of the rubber seal to allow pressure to escape.. maybe that would be easier.

            currently I store 5x12S sticks 2x5000mah on trays, 4x6S 5000mah, 4x4S 4000mah, 5x3S 2200mah and 2x2S 2150mah in it, so you could store 16x 6S 5000mah in it

Wow thats a lotta lithium! I only have 4 × 6s 5000's and a few life packs atm. I plan to keep the lipo count as low as possible

just to let you know what can fit in it, I must admit it has some weight and I am considering reducing it - but it does fit nicely ...

Yeah cheers... While browsing them I have been using the measuring tape trying to visualise how large of a box they are.. easier when it can be referred to as number of lipos!

Will consider my options before I order anything anyway =)

one really neat thing is to have a plastic bag of sand over the top of the lipo storage bays.

If a lipo goes up, the bag underside melts/brns away and the sand falls down into the bay smothering the lipo. It is likely this approach has the best chance of saving the other lipos stored in the box imo.

Now that is one of those simple yet genius ideas !

Will keep it on the table..

I've ordered my ammo box anyway.. think its a 50 calibre one so smaller than R4nd0ms one but should be big enough for my needs.

My mate gave me this old fishing box last week, i as don't go fishing (yet), i put some spare stickers i had on and it's now my lipo storage box
There was some foam sealing tape between the lids which i have removed to allow for a small air gap. My only concern is, it always really cold in that box which is good in summer but with Autumn looming it can only get colder! What is the lowest temperature a lipo can stand at storage charge without been damaged.
I'm thinking about getting a low cost storage heater for the garage to keep it above freezing.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but I think anything above 0 degrees is ok.. below 0 (so freezing) can damage the lipo and maybe even cause a failure.. I'm pretty sure down to 2 degrees C is ok though.

In the summer I store the lipos in the garage away from the house but in winter its a bit of an issue since the garage has no heating.. hence lipos needing to be stored in the house in a fire resistant box.
