  • My poor take on a series server psu

This is my "functional" go at a 24v 1400w 57A power supply.

when both turned on it has 1 12v rail and 1 24v and 2 12v rails with just box 1 powered up

its not overly pretty but it should do the job

The holes were drilled with Mr varley in mind if I bring it to the club yeah, the two at the back line up with the psu exhausts and front is inlet obviously. As I need to keep it shut when they are on as it's bloody noisy otherwise

Yes, recently bought a server PSU conversion and now never use it due to the noise. I like to be in the same room as my batteries when i am charging them, but 5 minutes of these things gives me a headache, let alone several hours charging for the day. Looking to make a case for them, but dont want to spend the money if the sound reduction is minimal. Would rather put the money towards a shop bought PSU that doesnt sound like a runway at Heathrow!

My poor take on a series server psu

If you do some research into your psu's you can install a fan control resister to reduce the speed from jet engine level to a more reasonable level.
Most of these server psu's are designed to work in a server room that's normally very warm, hence the hyper speed fans.

yeah, its usually just the case of connecting the correct pair of jumpers and it slows the fan down. With the lid shut the sound level is ok, you know its on but totally tolerable.

the box cost 25 quid from halfords so not to costly to set up. if you dont want to spend the money then have a look on the net for the fan mod for your psu

think i might get some small fan grills and air filters from maplin to neaten up the look a a bit and stop it getting full of dust.

would like to find out how to make the sodding LED's on the switches work......

Looking good, I've been trying to get mine into its case but there's a lot of soldering and stuff to do, should be done and soak tested for rcha. Gotta borrow a load bank as my chargers won't push it enough for my peace of mind. I want to check my cooling is up to the job at 90% load.

forgot to put on there that the red push button and the small switch (which will be changed to button when i can get another) are fan speed switches, so i can control turbo mode now makes it a lot quieter

YOU BE CAREFUL. You have not earthed the second unit there is plenty information about converting these properly if you get a fault the earth is there to protect the user. what you have built is potentially lethal. Convert the power supply properly and put the earth back on

EEEK!! Are those thin wires and spindly looking switches carrying 50 Amps?
Are you sure they are up to it - look a bit thin to me ..
Have you got a mains earth wire from the mains input socket going to the metal of the outer case at least - - I would do for safety TBH.

the switches arent carrying 50A they are just connecting the jumpers, they have about 0.1A going through them. cables that are carrying load are 10 gauge with poles rated to 60amps. everything is insulated (metal on the poles even though you cant see it) i will have a look at floating the dc earth on my spare unit then maybe give in a go on the second one in there.

care to elaborate? is it just the ac ground floating or is there something else im missing that is also going to cause damage?
