Stick time helped me loose the nervousness and increased heart rate, but to be honest balance £1000 on the edge of a cliff with some silly string holding it down and you'd probably have the same feeling. I think its just the whole not wanting to crash but knowing deep down you are going to that puts the heart rate up stick time and a few crashes and you begin to not worry so much. Getting the heli an tx set up so the model is predictable I've found, helps loads too (thanks Coolice!) Either that or have you tried Valium?.........

I find a really good vindaloo & several pints of rough cider tends to concentrate the mind on another part of the body . Like magic the thumbs work like a swiss watch
. The incontinence pants are a bit of a different story

Also the realisation that a crash can be fixed (time and money allowing). When I saw my first funfly with sponsored, competition level pilots I realised that crashes are just a part of the game. Obviously your aim should always be not to crash, but when you accept that a crash may happen, your mind can get on with the flying rather than the worry.
I like the way you have put that, and I think I will bare it in mind next time I'm having a good flying session.
With my B450 I have been doing circuits at a really good rate of knots and it does get thrown around sometimes ending up in all shapes. Up bit reckless really but sometimes I love it. No style just a bit mad.
I was out this evening doing just that and practised some powered auto approaches from both sides which was going well for me! So I moved on to have a bit of practise doing some run ups for a big loop getting it just past vertical then straightening out again. Blimey! it doesn't half shift once you pull back on the collective and give a little +pitch fair play.
I also have the fear factor which is stopping me from attempting to go all the way round but after reading what you said it puts things into prospective a little differently. Next time, if the wind is down a bit I might just have a go???
Thanks mattscupoftea

I find that thinking through a manouvre before I start flying really helps. Also it helps if you can understand what your intending to do and how to adjust it when flying. The next point is what's going to happen when it goes wrong, how are you going to save it. It's no good trying a piro flip and the heli leaving it backwards inverted at high speed if you can't fly backwards inverted.Invertix 400

I'm not controlling it, just preventing it from crashing

This is exactly what I was thinking after my last crash because the only reason I crashed is that I got too casual and started doing stuff at random and then got too far away and lost orientation. If you plan your moves and always know exactly what's happening it eventually gets kinda hard to crash. That and allowing enough height when trying new moves to give yourself time to bail out into a comfort zone in case the move doesn't go as it should.Originally posted by JoeBailey View PostI find that thinking through a manouvre before I start flying really helps. One thing I found is that if you have a few helis, flying the big expensive scary one will make the smaller cheap ones seem really trivial by comparison, you shift your fear threshold to a higher level as you slowly cozy up to the big scary ones.
In general there's no substitute for stick time.Last edited by trillian; 14-08-2013, 12:05 AM.Kasama, Minicopter, Henseleit, JR, Shape, Beam
