  • Soldering Iron

What soldering irons are folk using for large 10awg lipo wires?

My iron won't get hot enough to solder them properly - any recommendations on a cheap suitable iron?

    Cheers.

I'm using a cheapo 100 watt one I got on ebay.. Works great and you can replace the tips when needed.

    Something like this..

I brought a cheapo one from Maplins to solder connectors to lipos and extend motor wires. It was mains powered and only 30W; I couldn't get it to do the job. I did a little research and the general recommendation would be to go for something with a higher Watts.

I have tried all the cheap ones out and in the end you may as well buy a proper one and be done with it, unfortunately the one I have has been discontinued but its little brother is the RS DS50 which works just as well. I have soldered loads of connectors on ! Buy Soldering Stations RS DS50 Digital Soldering Station eu/uk RS DS50 online from RS for next day delivery.

I also have switched to a Temp controlled one

This is really nice & seems to have more power than a cheap 100W iron. Its very useful to be able to turn down the heat on EC3's or servo leads. You want to buy a 5-6mm tip for large connectors.

I used a P1-K Portasol Gas Professional soldering kit, I purchased this over 20 years ago and still going strong, they are not cheap, you can purchase it on ebay, cheapest is just over £49 with free delivery. I've soldered all different size wire from 8-26awg but you will need to purchase different size soldering tips, you only get one tip in the kit 2.4mm.

I'm using an Antex HP100 100 watt. Bought on Ebay for around £15 after someone on here recommended it. Works really well. I have soldered from 8awg with no issues.

+1 on that it's what I use and have never had a problem with it up to 8AWG wire

I use my plumbing blow torch for the larger wires into EC5 connectors.

I'm also using a 100w Antex iron without any issues when soldering EC5's & 10awg wire.
