Sad news to hear but if anyone doesn't think a 700 is capable of killing you quite easily then stop kidding yourself. It's a risk we decide to take every time we fly and we should make other people in the surrounding area aware of it too.

Horrible thing to happen .. Can't imagine what the accident would have looked like

Also things like this put such a bad press on the hobby, it's only a matter of time before they ban it :/

Poor guy that's terrible you know that these things can hurt you but never think of them killing you.

If he was a pro or an advanced pilot, I wonder if he flew like the other pros do, I.e 10 feet in front of them, regardless of their compteancy if you have a mechanical failure that close you have no time to react. Just speculating obviously but it does stick in the mind.

do they ban cars or motorbikes where people die every day? no ... however I wonder if a helmet like a street biker helmet would help in such a case?

This is on FB from MTTEC. Not related to this I think but

                        ATTENTION!

With some doubt, we consider the rapidly developing model helicopter scene. For example everyone who followed the Helimasters 2013 closely, will be able to clearly see that the flights increasingly becoming a battle of pure material. The accepted risk of some pilots was much too big, in our view. It's not just a shame about the high quality material, which is in this case very affected, but also a too big risk for pilots and spectators. Too small distances between the model and pilot, especially during high speeds manouvers makes us serious concern. It's only a matter of time until accidents happen, which - as we hope - will go out happy.

As a consequence, we believe it is necessary to limit the headspeeds flown by 700size helicopters to 2200 revolutions per minute. We will instruct all our pilots to keep a safe distance of at least 7 m (more is always better). Some risk will always be present, but we can not agree with us to risk the life of the mostly very young pilots. We will accept some competitive disadvantages with a smile by simply no longer operate at the limits.

The durability and performance of our models is already proven more than adequate and certainly needs no demonstration of extreme headspeeds of over 2600 rpm. We can only ask you, the customer, not to follow the hype of extreme headspeeds and willingly accepted security risks.

On what grounds would you ban it? People get killed in many sports unfortunately, they don't get banned do they.
