  • I'd forgotten how much fun a 450 was

I dug my two out yesterday and was suprised how well the pro clone flew. It's been 2 years since I few it last and I'm sure it flies beter now after sitting in it's box maturing

Anyway I charged up 4 packs today - two of which started by reading 12.2volts which means I left them fully charged in the box for 2 years (oops) but even they worked fine and recharged the two I used yesterday checking it out. Yeah, it's under-powered on a 430xl motor and towerpro mg60s servos but the quark and tail 520 hold that end solid in the 10 mile breeze and it's no bad thing to have to use collective management for sedate tick tocks. It wa salways more for orientation practice than any intent for hard 3D.

I briefly toyed with the idea of chucking some better servos and going fbl with it 'cos it was suprising fun..but then again it's such a pain to cram all the wires inside the fuse and the gyro tray would be too small for a cheap fbl unit - that and the fact that one can buy a clone fbl 450 pro for about £45 from HK UK warehouse anyway so upgrading is pointless.

It might have been the uplifting breeze but it didnlt try to crash anywhere near as fast as my other helis..even I had time to recover a few near misses... and so totally relaxing to fly a cheap crash cost heli. I think it's going to get a bit more air time until the renewed novely of twitchy heli wears off

I ended up drifting away from flying the 450s when we stopped flying at Croydon. I took the Beam E4 out a few weeks ago and it was pretty windy but It flew really well, it was always really stable for it's size. But I concluded that I must try it FBL so I'm going to convert it soon (haven't decided which FBL unit but most likely either a Total-G or 3GX).

I rarely fly my 450 as well, it just depends on how windy it is but I tend to fly it now more often because I like the feel of the fubar on it compared to my previous beastx. I just let flip like crazy yesterday until the timer goes off. The thing is, I have to fly it a little bit closer because I have been used to flying the 50 and 90 size helis.

Same here I've got a few heli's shelved so decided to fly my old Mini Titan325se that i converted fbl when the first align 3G came out & surprised me how well she'd flown.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

I have to fly my 450 quite close too unless the sun is exactly right because my valley gives mostly a background of hill and trees apart from a gap southwest and older eyesight has trouble orientating a small heli against any shadow. I really can't justify the cost of upgrading it to fbl 'cos I'd end up with new esc, motor and servos too which would be better spent on 500 spares. It's going to get used until i run out of my spares for it or tire of it again. It used to be possible to buy complete swash-up head and tt tail box combo for $22 and 10-packs of main gears for pennies on the clone market so I have a lot to crash my way through.....8 or 9 booms, 5 canopies.... could last a week...

With that amount of spares be worth going fbl.? Hobbyking is poss best option if you decided.

I recently put a tarot zyx on my dilapidated 450, and its given it a new lease of life. My 450 is my 'take on holiday' heli

I had looked at that but as earleir it'd be digital servos, head and fbl unit and probably new motor and esc - even the hk route it's £100 and not as though I don't have other helis. If FUbar was still about I might have put that loot towards an fbl head and fu for my 700n instead or just an extra case of nitro..

I'm trying to fly on the cheaper these days compared to my previous flamboyant crash and fix approach...

Glad to say that's not the case (yet)... just gave up on the constant new bling and kit approach...isn't going to make me fly any better and I;m never going to be a 3D god. reality is that all these helis are just pod and boom with a few tweaks MUCHO bullsh1t from owners and mostly the cheapo chinese stuff actually works very well.. might be lower quality metal but it ll bends in a crash wherever it comes from. At the moment I;d much rather put that sort of money towards an even bigger faster mower 'cos 6 hrs to cut the lawn on a 4foot ride-on is getting silly :-)

Or to put it another way... I've outgrown the constant need for bragging rights.. I'll fly a canopy made from duct-tape if it flies well and I can see it
