  • Flying music at Zone 2013....Editing style?

Before I say this... I'm sure the sound guy was doing an excellent job! and I mean no disrespect to him/her I actually didn't have an issue with the level of the sound like others have mentioned , was a little up and down but that wasn't the end of the world. I'm more interested in the flight tracks themselves, particularly the editing of the flight music.

How do the music selections work at these competitions? It confuses me slightly why the music is edited in such a haphazard fashion with no regard for the transitions when the flying is world class. Do the pilots hand in the music selections on the day and the sound guy queues them up quick as possible and plays each for a certain time? - Just trying to establish why not much time is spent on this aspect.

Does anyone think would be so much better if we could get these guys flying to professionally edited mixes for their flights? Some of the transitions between audio clips I think detracted from the overall effect of flying to music, which is so wonderful when done well.

If any pilots read this and want to have a go at putting together a really nice sounding track for a flight, Let me know I would love to see/hear what could be achieved with some really nice sounding edits over the flights and would be more than happy to try and create this for you.

    Best to you all.

Pilots hand the memory stick with the music.
The editing got nothing to do with the sound guy!

The pilots edit there own tracks and practice to them, they then send their tracks into ZONE, they play the track .. simple. It's the flying that the pilots try to show off, not the music, the music just accompanies there flight to add extra dynamics and for synchronization. Transitions isn't really something the pilots worry about too much, its the actual tracks their using that matters.

International Pilots know what tracks to use and when the should/shouldn't use transitions in their tracks.

Every pilot supplies there own music to fly to.
tracks are edited by the pilots so they can put all the technical moves in they want to, I.e fast, slow, big stuff etc etc.
part of the judging is music interpretation and how they fly to the music, and I have to say I did not see a bad one the whole competition, Jamie's final flight was so good and with the music i was just in awe

Pilots have been asking me to do some of the tracks for them, and part of what I have been doing is smoothing any transitions from one track to another, so it seems its all one track and supposed to be like it.

All im gonna say is wait till you hear little Harry's at Air. I dont think anyone used my mixes at Zone.

Ahhhhh I see. Don't get me wrong I was clear to point out that was not meant to be a dig at the sound guy or anyone who arranged the music

Also I was not trying to say they did not fly to it well, they were all totally stunning flights. I however come from an audio loving background (dj and producer) and was trying to suggest the quality of the edits could have been more pleasing to the ear which I feel is a reasonable comment genuinely not a dig at anyone at all. I am looking at this from the view that I would love to see every aspect of it as perfectly polished as the flying itself. Something about the edits just bothered me a bit, it would be so easy to sort out as well.

Like I mentioned if anyone would like me to put together some tracks for them to practice to just PM I would be more than happy to help. I have ultimate respect for everybody involved just trying to be constructive in my suggestions

Oh I know it wasnt a dig mate, like I say ive tried very hard with the pilots ive worked with to make the transitions seem fluid and natural rather than the usual chop that a lot of pilots have. Cos that annoys me for the same reasons as you.

Bang on mate pleased to hear someone is on the case! That is exactly what needs doing in my opinion. I know they are not being judged on the music, but the effect professional quality sound will have on a show like that cannot be ignored and at the level they are flying at I think it doesn't quite do them justice IMO

That would be great Kev. I know for a fact that Andy the sound guy was very put out about the comments last year,as he uses some very hi quality equipment.Sadly he can only put out what the pilots give him to put in!Directly from iphones and cheapo mp3. Is not allways good.

ok, I wanna post up the track ive done for little Harry. Just waiting on his or his dads say so. Obviously as its personal to him, and I dont wanna upset the lad by letting others listen to it without his approval

This is such a good discussion. Would love to hear what you have done Kev, almost don't want to spoil the surprise though.

I think once the bandwagon gets rolling this will actually allow pilots to be even more creative with the way they structure their flights.

Pro audio for guru pilots I say!
