Midlands Air Ambulance
Zone Organisers have come together and decided that the chosen charity for 2011 will be the Midlands Air Ambulance.
Midlands Air Ambulance Charity is responsible for funding and operating three Air Ambulances serving the Midlands and Welsh border region. Flying its first mercy mission in 1991, the organisation is regarded as one of the longest established and busiest Air Ambulance operators in the UK.
It is not always fully appreciated that Midlands Air Ambulance is funded solely by the public and local businesses. We receive no government money or National Lottery funding. The generosity of the public helps to raise the £6 million required each year to ensure our three helicopters remain operational.
Midlands Air Ambulance serves communities in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire.
Why Midlands Air Ambulance?
Not only is this charity relevant to our hobby as it is associated with helicopters, it holds a very special meaning to those that help organise the Zone and Weston Park Model Airshow event on the 18th & 19th June.
In 2009 at the Weston Park show there was an incident where a man was found near the main flight line unconscious and without a pulse. Due to the quick reactions of those on site and the efforts of the air ambulance the man was air lifted to safety, where he was attended to and made stable in intensive care. The following is a witness statement of the event as they unfolded on site.
" I was walking toward the flight line from our caravan at weston park model air show, as i was walking I saw a man collapsed on the floor, I ran over to him and noticed he was blue, so I checked for a pulse which I couldn't find , I checked his airways making sure nothing was blocking them, while two friends Andrea and Damon helped me, as a team we worked on him and performed CPR and got him breathing, not long after the onsite St Johns ambulance turned up with mask which we had to pump to help him breath, we phoned for the Air Ambulance which arrived in a very short period of time, the Air Ambulance crew came over and we helped them put the patient in the helicopter.
His family made a statement the next day on the P.A system explaining that he was now stable and being well looked after in intensive care, they also thanked everyone who helped in keeping the patient alive, thanks to the Air Ambulance we were able to get the patient to the nearest hospital in the shortest space of time"

At this year's Weston Park Zone event there will be lots of activities to get involved in over the weekend to help raise money for the charity. We hope everyone who attends can help out or participate in any way possible to help this worthy cause.
